Multi-Media Presentation Outline

The community: My focus these last seven weeks has been on the community of Seattle.
Through research and interviews, I have learned about the good and bad parts of my
favorite city. Although some of the information was difficult to digest, I am really glad I
took the time to go deeper, because Seattle is near and dear to my heart and I really
want to impact this community for good.
Define the problem: As I have talked about before in our discussions, there are a few
problems I want to address. The one I chose to focus on is actually two separate issues,
but ones that absolutely affect one another. Homelessness and sex trafficking are the
two problems I felt were worth addressing, as my interview with Kyle Reynolds from
Serve Seattle clearly pointed out the urgency in these areas. I remember specifically in
our interview, Kyle talked about the homeless population they serve as they head into the
streets. What compelled me was when he told me about the bridges that house many of
these homeless people, and how police offers will often show up unannounced and kick
them out of the only place they can sleep, covered from the elements.
Possibilities: One of the innovations I proposed was having safe buttons around the
community, so that either those in slavery or bystanders witnessing acts can push the
button and alarm officials to come and help the people. I think these buttons need to be
placed in rural areas, such as close to the bridges I spoke of or streets that house the
most prostitutes. Another innovation is somewhat obvious, but unfortunately is
something that is not happening as often as it should. This innovation is, education.
According to Dr. Chitikul, education and awareness of trafficking are the main ingredient

to stop slavery. He says governments, civil society, the press, private companies: each
and every entity must work toward promoting knowledge of this issue (2011).
Professional identity: As someone who wants to be involved in the nonprofit sector, my
role in combatting slavery is something I have taken upon myself in my future
professional career. Even if I still become a teacher, this still means I will be involved in
childrens lives who come from many backgrounds, and reside in cities where
prostitution may be prevalent. My purpose statement has continued to encourage me as I
figure out my role, and what next steps I take after graduation in December.
Empowering others to invest in their communities through service and humility.
Proposal: My desire is for viewers, listeners, and those in communities, to simply be
aware and possibly willing to volunteer their time and resources to causes that are
against trafficking. As a whole, I think if communities are leaning on one another
problems such as homelessness and trafficking will lessen. Lastly, a practical idea
comes from Linda Tomcczak, who says being a responsible consumer of goods and
services can help the problem. Purchase fair trade items, or shop local. Every person is a
consumer to some extent, so I believe this is a way people can get involved quickly.
