LAGERS
Bottom fermented at cold
temperatures using Lager
yeast.

Lager

The worlds most consumed beer

style. Originating in Southern
Germany, lager translated means
to store. Bottom fermentation
allows for cold ageing which gives
its smooth clean flavour profile.

DARK Lager
A very popular style across Europe
100 years ago. Having something of a
revival with its toasty/caramel profile,
subtle hopping and crisp finish.

PILSNER
A pale lager that has a fresh maltiness
and hints of caramel, with aroma and
bitterness from the noble Saaz hop.
Named after Plzen in the Czech Republic,
the town where it was first brewed.

Bock
A dark, strong, malty lager beer.

Maibock
Hop character generally more apparent
than in other strong lagers. Typically
asscoiated with spring time in Germany

Ales
Top fermented at warm
temperatures using Ale yeast

Fruit beer
A harmonious marriage of fruit
and beer. A style mastered by the
Belgians. In succesful expressions
the base beer should not be
overwhelmed by the fruit.

weiss
The classical wheat beer of
Bavaria. Pale, amber or dunkel.
Its almost always packaged
with yeast (hefe), except for the
Kristall variety. The banana, clove
and smoke characteristics of this
cloudy beer are directly linked to
fermentation and its specialised
yeast.

WITbier
The Belgian style wheat beer is
generally cloudy and lemony in
colour. The yeast strains are less
aggressive than its German
counterparts. The strong spice and
fruit notes come from the addition
of adjuncts like coriander and
orange peel.

Golden ALe

brown ale

As close as you are going to

get to lager. This top fermented
ale is a gateway beer to more
complex varieties of craft beer.
Light and refreshing with clean
crisp finish.

A descendant of ancient English unhopped

ales. Light nutty maltiness with hints
of toast. Crisp to medium-bodied. The
American version is deeper, richer and
generally far more hoppy than its English
inspiration.

SAISON
A soft hazy style of golden
ale said to originate from
farmhouse breweries of
Northwest Belgium. Dry,
crisp and complex with
plenty of fruitiness.

BLOND ALe
The Belgian version of the
anglophile Golden Ales. Keeps
perfumy ester qualities to a
minimum. Gold in colour due
to the use of pilsner malt. Easy
drinking and approachable.

Belgian tripel
Strongly resembles Strong Golden
Ale but slightly darker and
somewhat fuller-bodied. Lightly
hopped with fruity aromas.

Pale Ale
Named because of the use of pale malt
rather than the colour, which ranges
from golden to amber.
Brisk English hop nose, malt that may
be bready or nutty with light caramel
notes. American versions are robust,
usually with a generous dose of classic
American hops.

Indian Pale Ale

A high ABV and liberal use of hops. The
original English version is tamer and relies
on a maltier base than its hop-aggressive
American cousins. The Belgian varieties
have cleaner bitterness and
well-balanced ABV.

Imperial IPA
Breathtakingly bitter, dripping with
resiny hop aromas and high in alcohol.
A beer for special occasions.

American strong
ale
A catch all category for high ABV
ales that can include barley wines and
barrel-aged beers.

Scottish ale
Strong mahogany beer with a huge malty
nose, often with hints of roastiness. A full
sweet palate with very little hops.

Amber Ale
Moderate strength ale, also known as red
ale. There is a wide range of interpretations
with a common base of caramel maltiness;
the American varieties are often
lightly hopped.

Belgian Dubbel
A strong reddish-brown ale. Complex
caramel, raisin fruity flavours with a
crisp finish.

Belgian
Strong dark
A wide variety of deep rich flavours:
chocolate, raisins, caramel, burnt sugar.
Rarely any hop character.

Porter
The original black beer, created in London
in the 1700s. Well-balanced aroma, with
rich notes of chocolate, caramel, coffee,
nuts and sometimes subtle smokiness,
combined with an often dry, even
slightly acidic finish.

Stout
A black beer that has many sub-styles,
Guinness single-handedly revived the
popularity of stout in the mainstream. Styles
such as Oatmeal and London stouts have
their own unique characteristics, however
they all share a heavy, dominant roasted
malt on the nose. The flavour is often sweet
and creamy with a potentially bitter finish.

Black IPA
An emerging beer style roughly defined as
a beer with IPA-level hopping, relatively
high alcohol and a distinct toasty dark malt
character. Typically lacks the roastiness and
body of a strong stout and is hoppier than a
strong porter. Expressive dry-hopping
is common.

Strong old Ale

A beer best enjoyed next to a warm fire on a
cold winter s night.

English Bitter
Often rather harshly pilloried as a flat
warm beer drunk by old gits. Well,
this is hugely unfair to a very complex
and tasty style of beer.
