Families are warmly welcomed to these holy

mysteries in Jesuss Name. He understands that
children make a noise. Jesus Christ said,
whoever wishes to enter the Kingdom of
Heaven must become like a little child. Adult
members of the congregation are asked to try to
keep quiet before the service and at those times
marked in this booklet, focusing on the presence
of Christ in our midst. Please control your
whispering. If you do find yourself distracted it
helps to kneel so that those around can see that
you are at prayer, to close your eyes, and to
quietly say, Our Father, as Jesus taught us.
The music we use in the service can be
found at 952 in the orange hymnbooks,
which can be found by the church door.
The deacon introduces a time of silent prayer,
saying:
The Lord be with you.
All And also with you.
The Lord is in his holy temple, let all the
earth keep silence before him. Habakkuk2.20
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all
desires known, and from whom no secrets are
hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by
the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may
perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your
holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE GATHERING Kneel (or sit if you are unable to kneel)

A bell rings and we stand to sing
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the
King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy
health and salvation!
All ye who hear,
now to his temple draw near;
praise him in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord, who over all things
so wondrously reigneth,
shieldeth thee gently from harm, or
when fainting sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen
how thy desires ever have been
granted in what he ordaineth?
Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper
thy work and defend thee;
surely his goodness and mercy here
daily attend thee.
Ponder anew
what the Almighty can do,
if with his love he befriend thee..
Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in
me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come
now with praises before him.
Let the Amen
sound from his people again,
gladly for ay we adore him.
Priest In the Name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All Amen.
The Lord be with you.
All And also with you.
Prayers of Penitence
DeaconBrothers and sisters in Christ, as we
prepare to meet the Lord in word and
sacrament, let us call to mind and confess
our sins.

All

Almighty God, our heavenly

Father, we have sinned against
you and against our neighbour in
thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through
weakness, through our own
deliberate fault. We are truly
sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus
Christ, who died for us, forgive us
all that is past and grant that we
may serve you in newness of life to
the glory of your name. Amen.

Priest Almighty God, who forgives all who

truly repent, have mercy upon you,
pardon + and deliver you from all your
sins, confirm and strengthen you in all
goodness, and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen
Stand to sing:

Gloria in Excelsis

Glory to God in the highest, and peace

to his people on earth. Lord God,
heavenly King, almighty God and
Father, we worship you, we give you
thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the
Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you
take away the sin of the world: have
mercy on us; you are seated at the
right hand of the Father: receive our
prayer. For you alone are the Holy
One, you alone are the Lord, you alone
are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with
the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the
Father. Amen.

Priest Let us pray.

The Collect

O God, the giver of life, whose Holy Spirit

wells up within your Church: by the Spirit's
gifts equip us to live the gospel of Christ and
make us eager to do your will, that we may
share with the whole creation the joys of
eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son
our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and for ever.
All Amen.

Silence follows the sermon.

The Creed
All stand as the priest introduces the Creed:
We believe in one God, the Father, the
Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally

begotten of the Father, God from God,

Light from Light, true God from true
God, begotten, not made, of one Being
with the Father; through him all things
were made. For us and for our
salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and
the Virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and
was buried. On the third day he rose
again in accordance with the
Scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again in glory to
judge the living and the dead, and his
kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the
Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son, who with
the Father and the Son is worshipped
and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets. We believe in one holy
catholic and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of
the world to come. Amen.

The Peace

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.
The deacon says
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
You are invited to share a sign of Gods peace
with those immediately around you.
The Offertory
During the hymn a collection is taken to support
the mission of Christs Church.
Lord Christ,
who on thy heart didst bear
The burden of our shame and sin,
And now on high dost stoop to share
The fight without, the fear within;
Thy patience cannot know defeat,
The pity will not be denied,
Thy loving-kindness still is great,
Thy tender mercies still abide.

Prayers of Intercession So in our present need we pray

To thee, our living, healing Lord,
In the power of the Spirit, and in union That we thy people, day by day,
May follow thee and keep thy word:
with Christ, let us pray to the Father.
Kneel
At the end of each bidding the response is: That we may care, as thou hast cared,
For sick and lame, for deaf and blind,
Lord, hear us
All Lord, graciously hear us.
And freely share, as thou hast shared,
In all the woes of humankind;
At the end of the prayers
Merciful Father,

of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus
To help and bless, to heal and save;
This is the privilege we ask,
Christ. Amen.
And this the happiness we crave.
Amen.
The altar is prepared.

Priest Wise and gracious God, you spread a

table before us; nourish your people
with the word of life and the bread of
heaven.
All Amen.

This is my blood,
the new promise of God's unfailing love.
Do this to remember me.

Put peace into each other's hands

in touch with God's creation.
Communion
The Church of England welcomes the baptised
members of all churches to receive communion.
Please come to the altar as directed. If you
prefer to come for a blessing cross your arms
over your chest at the rail.
Please join the choir in quietly singing:
Rock of ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure,
cleanse me from its guilt and power.
Not the labour of my hands
can fulfil thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.

Put peace into each other's hands,

like bread we break for sharing;
look people warmly in the eye:
our life is meant for caring.
As at communion, shape your hands
into a waiting cradle;
the gift of Christ receive, revere,
united round the table.
Put Christ into each other's hands,
he is love's deepest measure;
in love make peace, give peace a chance
and share it like a treasure.
Silence is kept.
Kneel
Father of all, we give you thanks and
praise, that when we were still far off you
met us in your Son and brought us home.

Dying and living, he declared your love,

gave us grace, and opened the gate of
glory. May we who share Christ's body
live his risen life; we who drink his cup
bring life to others; we whom the Spirit
lights give light to the world. Keep us firm
in the hope you have set before us, so we
and all your children shall be free, and the
whole earth live to praise your name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

TRANSFORMING WIGAN You may be
wondering whats happening in the wider
Church beyond St Johns. Some highlights of
the work being done:
- A new team has been appointed to
work particularly with teenagers and
young adults, encouraging them to
grow in their relationship with God.
- Clergy and other leaders of the
churches are meeting regularly to plan
the best ways to work together in
order to build new congregations
alongside those that exist already. At
St Johns in the last month the Open
Table congregation which met here
was one such new congregation, and
Fr Alec will be looking for help in
building a new congregation meeting
on Fridays after school here.
- PCCs are being consulted on plans to
form one charity covering all the
churches of the town, which will help
us break out of a bad cycle, whereby
70% of the parishes in debt across the
diocese are in Wigan.
- The Order of Prayer will be
commissioned here at St Johns on
Friday 4th November. This is open to
anybody serious about opening their
heart to God and spending 30 minutes
every day in prayer for Wigan.
- Deeper Discipleship an evening for
the Church across Wigan to grow in
appreciating what God is doing among
us, meeting at St Marks, Newtown,
Sunday 2nd October from 7pm.
