its significance to this class. Without a named significance, your id can score
no higher than 75% (10 points)

Tribal culture
Patriarch carries all
authority and
responsibility, so instead
of having a system of laws
and stuff, everyone carries
their own weight in their
family, and the patriarch
is responsible for
punishments and all of
that
Self-sustaining
Patriarchal, patrilineal, patrilocal
Patriarchal: the patriarch
is the head of the
household
Patrilineal: genealogies
and inheritance are traced
through the male line
The fathers household is
the family compound, so
women will leave their
fathers and live with their
husbands.
Bt b
The household/family, unit
of tribal society
United by BLOOD and
dwelling place (yay living
with extended family)
rested with his fathers
Super important,
essentially the Bet-ab

would be together in life

AND in death, highlights
the importance of
family/tribal culture in this
society
Primary/secondary burial
Primary: Body placed on a
shelf of a tomb, left to
decompose for a while
Secondary: movement of
the bones into the family
tomb/the edge of the
tomb, ~1 year later
ethnocentrism
fictive kinship
suzerain/vassal
Book of the Covenant
Found in Exodus 19:23
Moses at Mount Sinai
Brt
Notion of imposition
Berit is COMMANDED by
God, so its not a mutual
agreement
Synonymous with law and
commandment
Has to be confirmed by an
oath, so more covenant
talk
cherubim
Defends Eden, so that
humans cant go back in

Fearsome armed creature

with a double-edged
sword
Curtain that divided the
Holy of Holies from the
Holy place decorated with
cherubim
Ark of the Covenant also
decorated with them
(hosts the tablets of the
covenant aka the 10
commandments)
Cherubim located on top
of the mercy seat, which is
placed on top of the ark of
the covenant
Function: There I will
meet you... from between
the two cherubim which
are above the ark of the
covenant, and there I will
speak to you...
Had human form, had four
faces and four wings
Face of a man, face of a
lion, face of an eagle, face
of a bull
Basically super terrifying
(see peg 122 of Epic of
Eden for more description)
Creatures well known in
the ANE
Union of the highest
powers
Served as semi-divine
guardians
Cherubim on the ark of
the covenant served as
the actual throne of
Yahweh
Basically Yahwehs
watchers, sentries, armed
guards
Difference between that
and Eden? Adam kicked
out of Eden sans hope of

re-entry. Ark allows for

God to communicate with
his people, AGAIN
Esarhaddon
Anthropomorphic
fideism, concordism, antiscientism
Fideism: science and faith
occupy separate spheres
Concordism: Genesis
concerned with matters of
faith, not matters of
science. Theyre separate
spheres
Anti-scientism: literal
interpretation of Genesis;
religion> science (this
view is used to talk about
miracles and things)
Hermeneutics
The lens by which the
OT/NT is interpreted
Historical Prologue
Genesis 1-11
Adam Noah
Inalienable land law
Found in Leviticus 25:1324
Land cant be sold
permanently, it can only
be inherited
The land must not be
sold permanently,
because the land is mine
and you reside in my land
as foreigners
Levirate Law
Pentateuch
First 5 books of the Bible
the gap theory
the "geological era" theory

Nephilim
Mentioned in Genesis 6:4
The Nephilim were on the
earth in those daysand

also afterwardwhen the

sons of God went to the
daughters of humans and
had children by them.
They were the heroes of
old, men of renown
Sons of God= angels.
Thus Nephilim= semidivine, superhuman
creatures, basically
morally fallen individuals
due to their ancestry as
fallen half-angels. Or
theyre the span of the
upper and lower class, or
the sons of Seth+ the
daughters of Cain, which
endangers the survival of
Gods chosen.
Basically spawning of
Nephilim, which were
corrupt individuals due
to the intermingling of
classes (whatever they
may be) resulted in the
flood.
JK. What sets them apart:
their unique ability in
battle
Napal: has to do with
wreaking havoc.
Sons of God and
daughters of men: an
idiomatic way to refer to
the first race of humanity.
Marriage explains the
spread of the race, and
also to notify the audience
how unprepared this
generation was for the
coming judgment of God.
Indicates violence,
bloodlust, and corruption
Utnapishtum
Found in the Epic of
Gilgamesh

Aka the Babylonian

Noah
Basically gets immortality
when forewarned of a
divine plan to flood the
world, so he builds an ark,
survives, and for his
efforts gets rewarded with
immortality
Sumerian Kings List
Canon
Apocrypha
Covenant of Grant
Genesis 12:1-3
The call of Abram
I will make you into a
great nation... etc
Prophet, priest, & king
2 Samuel 7
LOOK ITS A COVENANT
Introduction: I took you from
the pasture, from tending the
flock, and appointed you
ruler over my people Israel. I
have been with you wherever
you have gone, and I have
cut off all your enemies from
before you.
Blessings: now I will make
your name great, like the
names of the greatest men
on earth. And I will provide a
PLACE for my people Israel
and will plant them so that
they can have a home of
their own and no longer be
disturbed. Wicked people will
not oppress them anymore,
as they did at the beginning
and have done over since the
time I appointed leaders over
my people Israel. I will also
give your rest from all your
enemies
I will raise up your offspring
to succeed you... and I will
establish his kingdom

I will establish the throne of

his kingdom forever
JESUS. So David is essentially
a type for Christ
Also Davids prayer of
thankfulness
sacred space
Tetragrammaton
The name YHWH
Interpretation: third form of
the verb haya aka to be
Jewish people refused to say
this name out of high
reference for God
the Day of Atonement
the Scape Goat
Offering of the live goat to
Azazel on the day of
atonement.
Azazel: scapegoat. Probably a
place or demon that
inhabited the desert
So on the day of atonement,
the priest would lay his
hands on the goat, confess
the peoples sins (so the sins
of the people would be on
the goat), and then the goat
would be released into the
desert, aka the place of
demons
Basically, congregations sins
were returned to their place
of origin.
Intent: remove the power of
sin from the congregation,
foreshadowing the work of
Christ
the three great pilgrim feasts
Passover, the feast of weeks
(Pentecost/Harvest), and the
feast of Booths (right after
Yom Kippur, aka the day of
atonement)
Caused the Israelites, who
lived distinct lives, to come

together 3 times a year and

reaffirm their covenant,
which helped them keep their
unity as a nation
theocracy
Rule by the Lord
Israelite culture: prophet,
priest, king
So even though king had
authority, God had the
ultimate authority. As long as
they listened to him, they
would be blessed. If they
didnt, they would get
delivered into the hands of
their enemies.
Theocracy was why the
prophet Nathan had so much
power
type
A person or event in one era
of redemptive history that
has a specific parallel
(antitype) in another era of
redemptive history.
NOT AN ALLEGORY OR
SYMBOL
Has to do with the principal
of analogous fulfillment
Expresses the basic
hermeneutic by which both
OT and NT writers
understood themselves and
their predecessors (Epic of
Eden, 178)
Operates upon the principal
of limited fulfillment.
Theyre real, theyre
effective, theyre historical,
but they serve a limited
purpose (model plane
compared to a real one)
Most important function: it
teaches
Important type: the
tabernacle. Educated the

Israelites as to what sin and

forgiveness are (since even
though God was dwelling
with his people, they werent

holy enough to be in His

presence)

Essays: Take home group essays. Each group will choose one of the following
two essays. Each group will produce one, spotless, cited, two-page, doublespaced, brilliantly argued essay drawing on biblical and secondary readings. In
the header list each member of the group (with one CPO) to be turned in on
exam day. Each member of the group will receive the same final grade. And if
there is a member of your group who is not pulling their weight, anonymous
ratting is required.

1. Prove to me that the Book of the Covenant and the Book of

Deuteronomy, although narrative, are reflective of the
suzerain/vassal treaties of the ANE. Give specific biblical
examples, refer to assigned reading, give your opinion regarding
the dating of these biblical texts as reflected in their treaty
format.

2. Discuss the significance of the structure of the Tabernacle in

Israels understanding of human sin and divine holiness.
Illustrate your discussion by means of Israelite cultic law. What is
the eschatalogical role of the tabernacle/temple?
3. Illustrate to me how the promises of People, Place, and
Presence are illustrated in each of the biblical covenants (make
sure you include the New Covenant!). In doing so, prove to me
that Eden and the New Jerusalem are the same place.
Map: (4 points)
Trace Abrams migration, you must note the chief cities along the way
(dont forget the Ridge Route!)
Trace the traditional route of the Exodus noting chief nations and
regions along the way. Make sure you include Goshen, Mt. Sinai,
and the Plains of Moab
