The best
thing my parents
taught me was
to be tight with
money
INTERVIEW
Your emotions are closer to the surface
when you become a parent.
The first record I ever bought was
Wig-Wam Bam by The Sweet. I think I was
seven. When I was at primary school, you either
liked Sweet or Slade you couldnt like both.
Its not good for my image but I like
driving too fast.
My greatest weakness is alcohol. Guinness
and wine the usual stuff. Chips, too. Im always
hoovering up the chips the kids have left, which
is not many by the way.
If I could pass any law I would Theres
a law in the Netherlands where if theres
any collision between a car and a bicycle,
its always the car drivers fault regardless. That
is a really good law. I have to walk my kids to
school and cross the road in front of the Range
Rovers of Hampstead and I dont know what
theyre on. They come up on the pavement
and wont stop for you even though youre
with kids. They probably have an appointment
at Trevor Sorbie or are going for a pedicure.
I drive a dirty, filthy VW.
The shop I cant walk past is the Arsenal
club shop. If I go in there, I binge. Mainly
because Im trying to make the kids support
Arsenal so I come home with pencil cases,
beanie hats, miniature kits, badges all this
wonderful stuff.
The most expensive thing Ive ever splashed
out on is my wedding suit. When we got
married, Katie was worried about how much
her dress was going to cost and then she
found out that my suit cost more. I had it
hand-made on Savile Row.
My perfect Sunday is at home with Katie
and the kids, Arsenal on the telly winning then
a walk on Hampstead Heath.
My favourite place in Britain is Arsenals
old Highbury stadium, which is no more. But
also there are some places we take the kids to
in Northumberland, where Katie is from, which
are just fantastic. Alnwick Castle is wonderful.
My last holiday was We usually go to Spain.
I have a flat there that Ive had for years. The
kids love it. Katies bored of it, though.
Im currently reading Au Revoir Crazy
European Chick by Joe Schreiber. Its an
American novel about a guy who has an
exchange student from Lithuania staying
in his house who seems to be really boring.
It turns out shes an assassin.
The best day of my life was my wedding
day. I have to say that but its true. Also my
40th birthday was great.
If I had half an hour left on Earth Id be
with Katie and the kids running in the opposite
direction from whatever was ending it.

We both find time to see each other because
its important to do that, as it is with your friends
and family. Everybody is busy and we live in a
very busy world, but you have to make time.
She also finds time to stay in regular contact
with her 200,000 plus social media followers and
enjoys the instant connection with her supporters.
I absolutely love my fans and I get to chat
to them a lot on Twitter and thats why I think
Twitter is really great. They call themselves The
Sprouts and they are really, really wonderful,
so passionate and they make me smile. They
are so supportive. It really takes your breath
away and Im amazed by the lengths some of
them go to be so supportive and so sweet.
Samantha will admit to the odd digital
proposal, but says its way too early to start
discussing real life wedding bells, although
she will be walking down the aisle twice this
summer once as matron of honour for her
sister and once as bridesmaid for a school friend.
Lets just take every day as it comes shall
we? she jokes, at the suggestion that Jack
might get down on one knee any time soon.
Im really looking forward to my sisters
wedding. Shes getting married to somebody
who is one of my best friends. They met
through me, so Im so excited about that
and its going to be one of the most special
moments of my life. But as for my own
future, I like to take things more step by
step and not get overwhelmed with stuff.
Also, I like to enjoy every step and not look
too far ahead and not look back too much.
I want to enjoy the step Im on now and see
what the future brings. Thats the way I am.
Samanthas new album, Samantha Barks, is
released on Friday. She is touring the UK from
Wednesday until June 30.

INTERVIEW
children, but found herself pregnant with Georgia,
then three months after Georgias birth, with Lydia.
I got chatting one day to a woman with about six
children around her in a restaurant, found out she
was a foster carer and thought, Maybe I could do
that, and gave her my number.
Within two days Hackney Social Services was
on the phone and after months of training she was
asked to take her first charge, a three-month-old
baby girl. Georgia and Lydia were toddlers then
and helped her choose a cot and baby clothes.
I remember the knock at the door and shouting,
Girls, girls, shes here! We were so excited and
for a year they fought over her.
The hardest part of fostering is always saying
goodbye: its only designed to be shortish-term
care; often a baby is adopted after a year or so.
Of course, I cried when she left us after a year: its
devastating to say goodbye you feel you have lost
a limb for a while. If you didnt develop a bond you
shouldnt be a foster carer. But I try to think of
myself as a positive chapter in their lifes book.
In the early days I remember going to bed
crying, thinking, Am I damaging my own children by
fostering? Am I being a good enough mum to
them? With this constant attaching and detaching
going on, will my children have problems having
proper relationships later on?
Here, Lydia immediately jumps in: No, I think
its made me stronger, Mum. Its taught me about
sharing and never judging people. Shes full of
admiration for her mother, and thinks growing up
sharing a bedroom with three or four other children
helped her overcome her crippling shyness. The
house was pretty chaotic and loud and I think that
brought me out of my shell I certainly couldnt
have been in TOWIE if Id been shy and quiet.
I used to mother the younger children, and
sometimes theyd confide in Georgia and me
because they didnt yet trust adults because of the
experiences theyd had. I used to love sharing a
bedroom and living with a huge family it was a bit
like being on a school trip, but all the time.
Still, Debbie thinks that growing up in the chaotic
atmosphere contributed to Lydias love of structure
and order, adding: If you look at my wardrobe
everythings just thrown in, whereas Lydias is all
colour-coordinated with long-sleeved shirts in one
place and dresses in another. Lydia giggles: Its
true. Im a much more structured person than
Mum. Im very house proud and everything has
to have its place.
Occasionally, all four children would complain
about sharing their home with a succession of
strangers, but generally werent resentful, says
Debbie. What I used to hang on to was that all
siblings argue and if I had six or seven birth children,
it would have been no different, she says. I do
think I probably made a lot of excuses for my foster
children because of the start theyd had in life
compared to my own children, whod always had
a mum and dad who loved them, and who hadnt
gone missing or left them without food.
Not that foster caring has been plain sailing:

HEALTH
Sudden cardiac
arrests: the facts
O Sudden cardiac arrests
are different to heart attacks.
A heart attack occurs when
one of the arteries in the
heart gets blocked, but a
sudden cardiac arrest
(SCA) is an electrical heart
disturbance that prevents it
from beating properly.
O If sudden cardiac arrests
are diagnosed within
minutes, cardiac massage
(CPR) or a shock from a
defibrillator can restore the
normal rhythm of the heart.
O Consultant cardiologist Dr
Honer Kadr, who works at the
Queens Hospital in Romford,
and the Spire Hartswood
Hospital in Brentwood, Essex,
says about 140,000 people
of all ages die from sudden
cardiac arrests each year
in the UK. Many will have
coronary artery disease,
hypertension, disease
of the heart muscles or
congenital heart problems.
O If the patient isnt revived
within five minutes of a
sudden cardiac arrest, the
brain doesnt get oxygen
and glucose. If the patient
survives, theres a very high
risk of irreversible brain
damage, says Dr Kadr.
O Survival rates drop by more
than 10 per cent for every
minute without defibrillation.
After 10 minutes, the
chances of survival are
extremely small.

Our agony aunt gets to the heart of your relationship problems
How can I stop his mum moving in with us?
sorry for the old lady, but the
responsibility robbed her of her
own life. Ive told my husband all
of this, but all he keeps saying
is that things would be different
with us; that he would persuade
his mother to go into a residential
home if things got too much. I
know, good luck with that one
Im usually very good at making
him see things from both points
of view, but hes really digging his
heels in over this and were having
some terrible rows. Things arent
helped by the fact that he tells
his mother everything I say and
so shes now being sniffy with me,
too. The other week, she came
for Sunday lunch and there was
a definite chill in the air. I feel
as though the pair of them are
ganging up on me and I dont like
this one bit. How do I ring-fence
my home and my life without
appearing selfish and cruel?
Youre not being selfish or cruel
just realistic. Im sure that, in
principle, moving your mother-in-law
into your home does seem a really
good idea. You have the space;
she has the money to pay you
rent and simply needs a base,
but you are absolutely right to
look ahead. The fact is that
Sex matters
I cant trust my girlfriend any
more. A few nights ago, after a
furious row, she confessed to
sleeping with a friend of mine
while I was on a training course.
When pushed, she admitted to
pursuing him. Apparently, shed
been sexting him for weeks
before he came to our house
for a night of passion. Ive now
asked her five times if shell
promise to never cheat on me
again but she refuses to make
that vow. All shell say is that
she loves me but doesnt want
to be tied down. Are we doomed?

Welcome
party
Whether its a charity event or to show
off your blooms to others, inviting
the public into your garden isnt as
daunting as youd think, says Alan
works this autumn to help it recover.)
In an ideal world youd pick your tie
so your event takes place when the
garden naturally looks its most
colourful, but if you cant, organise
some extra planting specially for the
occasion even if its just some really
good tubs of annuals. As long as you
can get them planted six weeks or so
beforehand and you pack plants in
generously, they should look good on
the day but clearly the further
ahead you can get them started the
GARDENING
Growing attractions
Running a plant stall at a garden open day is a great way of raising funds
for charity. People who have just walked round a garden are usually in the
mood to buy a few plants especially unusual ones theyve just seen in the
garden plus it removes the temptation of helping themselves to a cutting.
OTake the trouble
to make your stall
look attractive. A
decorated market
stall-style barrow
with a bit of awning
or bunting makes
all the difference
to sales.

IvE always
loved comedy.
I grew up
watching shows
like Monty
Python and
joined the
Cambridge
Footlights at
university, but at no point did I ever
think that comedy could be a job.
I always feel really old when I say this,
but for most of the 1970s, there was
no such thing as a comedy club. the
idea that Id finish university and then
be a comedian was just ludicrous
so I became a barrister, instead.
Londons Comedy Store opened in
1979 and changed all that; suddenly,
there was somewhere for people to
do stand-up. there was an incredible
line-up of talent: French & Saunders,
rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson,
Alexei Sayle, Mike Myers, Paul
Merton, Ben Elton. I think I came
across as a feeble but slightly
pompous middle-class bloke, which
is sort of what I was. It was all rather
shambolic in the early days but that
made it all the more exciting.
I must have been doing all right
because I started getting asked to
write scripts for radio and used to
do the warm-up for tv shows. But it
was still a hobby that occasionally
made me a bit of extra pocket money.
I carried on practising law, which is
what paid the bills.
My big break was getting asked to
compre a radio 4 comedy series in
1986 called The Cabaret Upstairs.
One of the people who worked on the
show was Dan Patterson, a young
producer who was full of ideas, one
of which was an improvised comedy
game show called Whose Line Is It
Anyway? we did one series for radio
4 and Dan immediately said, Lets
take this to tv. Channel 4 loved it
and wanted a whole series.

The hunt is on for Tati, the beloved dog of our columnists friend. Will they
collar the missing mutt before its too late? Illustration by Susan Hellard
e all love a walk with our fourlegged friends and when there
are lots of new places to explore,
even the best-trained companion
can suddenly become distracted
and out of earshot. The countryside is alive
with interesting smells, things to chase and
new adventures, so your fireside lapdog cant
be blamed for regressing to its wolfy forefathers
instincts. The daintiest of dachshunds can easily
morph into a badger hunter extraordinaire in a
matter of moments and once underground, the
thrill of going a-hunting can easily go badly wrong.
After calling your dog six or seven times whilst
scanning the horizon, waiting expectantly for their
familiar form to appear then slowly your blood
begins to runs cold, calling with increasing volume
and urgency until you have to face the
inconceivable: hes not coming back. Then follows
blind panic retracing your steps, frantic calling,
stopping everyone you meet to ask if theyve seen
your beloved dog and phoning anyone in the area
to help in your search. You call dog wardens,
vets, animal shelters and the police, and in the
back of your mind fight the worst scenario that
somebody has stolen your dog and you may never
see him again.
luckily, Ive only ever lost one of my dogs, and
then only for a couple of hours. Sparrow, our black
labrador, mustve jumped the cattle grid at the
front gates when the postman arrived one Saturday
morning. While I was yelling and whistling for her,
driving around the land and going out of my
mind with worry, somebody had seen her by
the pedestrian gate and sensibly took her to the
local vet. Id called them earlier with no luck and
had just driven into the lane to drive further afield
when they rang to say, Have you lost a black lab?
I burst into tears of relief and drove straight there
to collect her. The second theyd scanned her, my
details appeared on the computer and she was
soon back home (but is never out of the house
now without her collar and Id disc).
A few days ago, my lovely friend curly
rang in floods of tears.
Weve lost Tati, she sobbed. She never goes
further than the garden. Ive looked everywhere
and I just dont know what to do next.
Tati is their adored Norjack (a cross between a
jack russell and a Norfolk terrier). Within 24 hours,
curly had printed flyers with her photograph, posted
them everywhere including the local supermarket
and taxi firm and contacted every organisation
