Bullfighting

Bullfighting is a traditional custom from Spain that has been adopted by our culture since
many years ago. This tradition was introduced in Quito, when the Spanish conquerors arrived.
Immediately, they started teaching, native people, their thoughts and beliefs. Also, they began to
impart their culture and traditions. The bullfighting festival known as Jesus del gran poder is
usually held in December because of Quitos foundation. However, there have always existed
controversies between the groups of people who are in favor of bullfights, and the ones that are
against them. In my opinion, I am against bullfights for several reasons. First of all, I consider it
a really cruel, boring, and violent tradition. What is more, I cannot understand how people can
enjoy watching the suffering and desperation of an animal. Also, it is a risky practice where
many lives are in danger, mostly the one of the bullfighter. Through all the years that this
tradition has been carried out all around the world, many cases of serious injuries and even
deaths of bullfighters have been registered. Also, there have been many cases in which the bull
jumps the walls that surround the place and injure the spectators of the show. Another reason
why I do not like bullfights is because I consider it an excuse that people, especially teenagers,
use only to drink without control. In consequence, the rate of accidents and disasters increase. On
the other hand, as it is not a proper tradition from our culture we do not have the adequate
conditions of security and spaces. This tradition goes against nature because it threatens the life
of a living. It is true that fighting bulls are especially bred to fight, but not in the cruel way they
are treated. Although bulls are animals, they have rights that everybody should respect them. All
in all, I do not support the practice of bullfighting because of the reasons mentioned above, but I
definitely respect the people who appreciate and enjoy it.
