found in a list ("Rolla der portugiesischen Nation, oder Nomina der samtlichen
alhie residierenden vnd wohnenden Portugiesers") made by the Hamburg burghers,
dated 1612, to count the resident Portuguese merchants: "Abraham de Errera sambt
seiner Haussfrau vnd Magdt" (p. 68), see Alfonso Cassuto, "Neue Funde zur altesten
Geschichte der portugiesischen Juden in Hamburg," Zeitsc/zrijt far die Geschichte der
]uden in Deutsch/and, H eft 1 (1931): 58- 72. No children of this Abraham de Errera
and his wife are noted; it is known that Abraham Cohen de Herrera and his wife
Sarah had no children in Amsterdam either (cf. Yosha, Myth and Metapher, 46f.),
but this may be a mere coincidence.
51 This oral statement made by Scholem in a discussion with Franz Niewohner
is printed in the latter's article "Abraham Cohen de Herrera in Hamburg," Zeitschrift
far Religion und Geistesgeschic/zte 35 (1983): 164, note 9.
52 The only exception is Joseph Kaplan, "A Lurianic Philosopher in the age of
Barack," Pe'amim 70 (1997): 131 [Hebr.] , who doubts Nissim Yosha's statement that
H errera served as rabbi in the Sephardic community of H amburg, cf. Yosha, Myth
and Metaphor, 31 .
53 Cf. Kaplan, "A Lurianic Philosopher in the age of Barack": 13 1.
