AS 2: ABSTRACT

The Rebirth of Saint Peters Basilica


Since Christianity emerged in 400 CE, monasteries, baptisteries and churches dominated the
city and its image. Despite of having a complex history, the Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano
known as Saint Peters Basilica is one of the famous Roman Catholic church in the world and
one of the holiest cities in Christendom. This study covers the analysis of the significance of
the basilica that lies in part of the difficulties involved during its construction in 400 CE and
1600 CE. Some of the matters arise during the construction of the basilica includes the use of
spoila with the columns in the old Saint Peters and Michelangelo Buonarotis erection of the
dome. The understanding of how the succeeding popes were able to manage the financial
needs of this basilica to be able to continue and maintain with the construction will be
discussed in this study. These issues are addressed provided with sufficient evidence in order
to have a deeper understanding the significance of building Saint Peters Basilica.
