The NSO reported that 100,908 people died of heart diseases in 2009.

This
accounted for 21 percent of all deaths in the country.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that an estimated 17 million people
die of cardiovascular diseases every year. Most of these were heart attacks and
strokes.
"A substantial number of these deaths can be attributed to tobacco smoking, which
increases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease
23 fold. Physical inactivity and unhealthy diet are other main risk factors which
increase individual risks to cardiovascular diseases," the WHO said.
