From the desk of Mr. Kenneth E. Miller, Principal: October, 13, 2016 In lieu of all the recent events, | thought ! would share with everyone how our school day has started. This may answer some questions, My apologies to those who have emailed me and are ‘awalting a response. Please understand that my inbox is filling up far faster than I can respond. Today started a bit more tense than normal. in addition to the racial stur, since yesterday social media has become active rumors of unfounded threats. We have investigated each and every rumor and we have found none of these threats to be credible. However, to promote a safe environment, we asked the State Police to provide us with additional support this morning. Additional guidance counselors from across the district have been made avallable to talk to students. By 7:45, the hallways were clear as usual, Attendance is at or near normal levels and classes are proceeding normally. During the morning announcement, | made the following statement to the student body: “Good morning Central Dauphin. I cannot begin to express my disappointment, embarrassment, and frustration with the racist post that was placed on social media by students of this school on Tuesday ‘night. The image was repulsive and without question, completely unacceptable. And, though I did not do it, Iwant to apologize to each and every person in this building that was subjected to the post. know ‘many were hurt and angered by the post. Iam sorry. Please know we are here to support you in any ‘way. No one in this school should ever be exposed to such treatment, Unfortunately, our schoo! is a microcosm of society and not inmmune to offensive comments. You hear a Jot about the racial divide in this country and our division has now been exposed to, not only OUR area, ‘but from what read the rest of the nation. I have learned a lot about this school in the last 30 hours. I have been reminded of the great things we do and I have been also enlightened to the vile underbelly of the halls we walk every day. Ihave received countless emails filled with stories from students in this building, both current and former; speaking to the terrible ways we treat each other. T can say without hesitation that we cannot continue this way. Now more than ever, we need to be the change we want to see in the world. We need to take a serious Look at how we treat each other and how we talk 10 each other, in person and on social media. Because if we continue on our current path, then we are no better than those in society who offend us, I hope today begins a new chapter. If you have any ideas regarding how we can go about a cultural improvement of this school, please find me to discuss. I wish everyone a good day. Thank you.” ‘Again, today was and will continue to be a challenging day. Please know we are here to support your student in any way possible. 1 encourage you to email me with any concerns, but please understand my response time is slower than normal. ‘Thank you for your time and support. Sincerely, Jie Kenneth E. Miller Principal
