We recommend thatthe design professional note on the drawings when a 1/8 Stress Increase is, permitied, for net uplit, end moments or other forces caused by ‘wind or seismic loads. Concentrated & Varying Loads ‘Standard SU! joists are intended to support uniform loads. ‘Section § 5 Loads of the Recommended Code of Standard Practice requires that load diagrams be provided for joists, ‘supporting non-standard loads such as concentrated and tapered loads. A recommended method for selecting approx- imate joist sizes for non-standard loads is outlined in Section 5.5 of the Sil specification, pages 91 to 99 and on pages Xl and Xill ofthis catalog. Unless instructed otherwise through the Use of load diagrams or spacial notes, joists shown as standard designations will be designed for the 8JI uniform load accard- ing fo the span and designation. Chord bending must be considered for concentrated loads that ‘are not at panel points, Chord bending considerations are ‘eliminated when the joist is designed forthe effecte of the ‘concentrated loads and a shop or field applied web member is, placed from the concentrated load to the nearest panel point (Soe page XIV for typical web stifener detail) Tapered loads ‘such as snow drift need to be cleary shown and defined. items such as length, maximum load from drift and joist affected need to be identified through the use of load diagrams. KES vs. K-Series Joists ‘A KCS josst has constant moment and shear capacities along its length, The maximum uniform load is 550pt. Ths jist series, allows flexibility of concentrate load locations and magnitudes ‘due to items such as mechanical units. Since the joists se- lected based upon maximum moment and shear the specifier ‘needs only be sure that these values are not exceeded. Off panel loads must be reinforced according to the “Field Appliod ‘Web Stiffener Detail” on page XIV ofthis catalog. See pages 26 through 31 of tho Sul spocitications ofthis catalog and pages X and XI for KCS selection examples. Tle Joists When Tie Joists are required the bearings on the joists are provided with slotted holes. The slots permit minor adjustments in the field when bolting to columns or beams. Regulation '§1926.751(0)1 of the Office of Occupational Satety and Health ‘Administration (OSHA) requires that joists be field bolted to ‘columns when the column is not braced in at least two direc- ‘ions with structural steel members. This is roquired to provide lateral stability o the column during erection. When a joist does rot occur directly at a column line the joist nearest the column should be bolted. (see figure 4 on page V) Chord Forces Structural frames and bracing systems may induce axial forces into joist chords. The spectying professional needs to define thase forces on the documents and advise when an allowable stress increase Is permitted. End Moments Ifjoists are being used as a par ofa rigid frame the specifying professional needs to show magnitude, direction of the end ‘moments and required moment of inertia. Consideration must algo be made for the load path of the resulting couple. Joists, Which are to support and moments without top chord tie plates ‘can be uneconomical. Without top chord tie plates local eccen- tricties increase top chord member size requirements, If ond combinations are to be evaluated the breakdown of moments is required. Also, the combinations in which an. allowable stress increase is permitted must be defined. Moment Resisting Frames Joist products are routinely spectied as members of moment resisting frames. These members must resist any continuity ‘moments such as liva load and wind moments, The magnitudes of the moments mus! be provided by the specifying professional. ‘Typically, the member is designed for ful gevity loads assuming a simple beam. The end moments are then applied using the appropriate load combinations. ( ‘A very important consideration in designing joist products for moment resisting frames is the connection fo the column. The jist memaers and connections must be designed to develop the required end moments. Figure 1 below snows how an additional eccentric moment develops in the joist when a. standard bearing detail is used. This additional moment must, be resisted by the joist and the connection. ‘Another alternative is the use of a “tio angle" to connect the tends of the joist girders, thus reeisting the continuity end moments, s00 Figure 2 below. The “TIE ANGLE” only helps to. resist dead and live load moments, they do not help with. lateral forces from wind or seismic loads. The seat is still required to resist tho wind end moments as discussed above. “The design of top chord te plates and angles Is the responsibiliy (0 the specifying professional Due consideration must be given to the load path of the forces inthe seas of jlsts which resist end moments that bear on joist Giriers at column lines. The load path of the end moment on ‘these joists must go through the seat of the girders. Often the ‘lrder seats requiro stiffening plates that can interfere with oling requirements, see Figure 3 below. Effective -vs- Gross Moment of Inertia Joist products experience some degree of shear deflection because of their open-web system. Because of this effect the chord moment of inertia is not 100% effective. SJ supports increasing deflections calculated using standard beam formulas by 15% fo account for shear deflection. Therefore the effective ‘moment of inertia fs less than the chord moment of inertia, see ‘equation 1 below. i EQUATION ae ‘The | formulas at the boginning of the K, LH, DLH standard load tabled are based on simple beam deflection increased by 15%. The | formulas can be derived by increasing the simple beam etedtion equation by 1.18, setting t equal to L'360 and solving {or | in terms of W and L, This i ilustrated in an example ‘section 1006 af the Sul catalog, “How to Specity Joist Grders” Moment of inetia values are also a consideration when designing joists as part of structural frames. The stifness of members in a frame diecty affect the dstrbution ofthe internal forces. Tho speciving professional must consider the effective Joist moment of inertia ina frame analysis. Tho spectying professional can use the avaliable formu inthe 8 ables to Ealulate the approximate momento intea of a member. By stating gross moment of inertia on contract documents it wil be assumed that the specifying professional has already accounted for the 15% increase. Effective moment of inertia. equires the 15% increase to be accounted for by the manutac- ‘rer. If gross or effective is not specified NCJ will assume gross, moment of inertia apples. Sloped Joists ‘The Standard SJ! Load Tables are intended for parallel chord Joists installed to a maximum slope of 1/2 inch par foot vith the foad normal to the top chord. For sloping members lve load is, typically projected over the plan length and dead load along the ‘slope length. t's the responsbilty of the design professional to properly ulize the SJI load tables by resolving all loads normal to the fop chord. Ary components parallel to the top chord must bbe specified by the dasign professional and should be included ‘as addtional axial load in the top chord. NCJ wil determine Uno loads based on the standard designation and actual length Of joists along member slope unless insiucted otherwise. Ifo ‘addtonal axa top chord leads are noted on the contract documents [NCJ wll assume that the design professional has accounted for them in the selection of a standard joist. See page Vl for an ‘oxample ilustrating a suggested method of speciving sloping fists. ‘camber (Camber is optional for K-Series joists, however, NCJ manutactures al josts with camber. Camber isthe intial upward curvature thats bit into a member. Camber 's based upon a radus of 3,600 fee. Depending on the length of a cantilevered end it may have an Iniial dowrward defection as a result of camber within the span. Cantlevered ends must be investigated for deflection and camber by the specilying professional ‘Al pists are manufactured withthe approximate camber as spec fied in sections 47, 108.6 and 1008.6. The specfying professional is responsible forthe joist designation and consideration ofthe camber ‘with respect to other components of the structure. Extenor and end joists may not receive the same amount of load as adjacent joists ‘and therefore experience diffrent deflections. The specter should ‘conser relative deflections when selecting joists. Approximate, momont of ineria formulae are contained in the Sl load tables. The New Columbia Joss Company can provide approximate moment of Inertia information upon request. To remain consistent with established LRFD design procedures itis, recommended that factored loads be spectfiod ‘The above procedure is also applicable to the LH/DLH Series Joists and Joist Girders. @- FIRE-RESISTANCE RATINGS WITH STEEL JOISTS Hundreds of fire tests on steel joist-supported assem- blies have been conducted at nationally recognized test- ing laboratories in accordance with ASTM Standard E119, ANSI A2.1/UL 283, and NFPA 251. Because of practical loading restictions and limitations of fumace dimensions, the vast majorty of these tests were run using lightweight joists - normally from 8 inches to 14 inches deep. This practice was advantageous in that it ‘established the minimum acceptable joists atthe shallow and lightweight end of the joist load tables The specified minimum size joist as listed in Underwriters Laboratories (U.L,) Fire Resistance Designs is the jist which combines the required mini- ‘mum depth and minimum weight per foot. Joists, of the same series, which meet, or exceed tho spectied mini- murs may be used provided the accessories are com patible. The dimension from the bottom chor of joists to the celing, whether given or calculated, is a minimum. K-Series Joists, LH Series Joists and Joist Girders specified in floor- or roof-celing assemblies, shall be esigned and manufactured in accordance with the Stee! Joist Institute's Spectications adopted November 4, 1985 revised November 12, 1991, Many of U.L’s Fire Rated Assemblies now specttcally list K-Series Joists. When a K-Series Joist is specified in a particular ULL assembly the K-Series Joist shall have its design stress limited only ifthe assembly speci ically limits the design stress of the K-Series Joist. K-Series Joists may be substituted for S-, +, and/or H- Series Joists spactied in ULL. fioor-, or root-ceiing designs as follows: Floor-Celing Assembles: K-Sories Steo! Joists of equal or greater depth and weight per foot may be substituted for any S-, J, andor H-Series Joist in any floor-ceiing design, which employs a structural conerete floor and sus- ended membrane ceiling. Roof-Ceiling Assombiies: K-Series Stee! Joists of equal or greater depth and ‘weight per foot may be substituted for any S-, J-, andor H-Series Joists in any root-eiling design with the folowing restrictions: 2) Minimum Nominal Depth = 10 inches (254mm) b) Maximum Tensile Stress = 26 KSI (179 MPa) Any stess limitation specified in a U.L. floor or roof fre rated assembly containing S, J and/or H Series Joists shall remain applicable when a K-Series Joist is subst- luted. Also, certain UL. assembly designs contain restrictions regarding minimum allowable joist member sizes, areas of steel, and/or bridging material sizes, These restrictions remain applicable when a K-Series Joists substituted and itis the responsibilty of the spec- itying professional to ist all such restrictions on the con- tract drawings. The following procedure may be used to substitute the proper K-Series Joist for any S-, J+, andor H-Series Joist listed in a ULL. design assembly 1. Determine the uniform load per foot the joist is required to suppor. 2. Select a design from the ULL. “Fire Resistance Directory" that matches the building construction and has the required fire rating, 3. a) Floor Assemblies: ‘Adjust the design load per foot calculated in step 4#1 for any required reduction in stress level by multiplying the load by a factor of 30 ksi (207 MPa) divided by the specified stress level, 0. [a0/24 (207/165), 90/22 (207/152). ete b) Roof Assemblies: ‘Adjust the design load per foot calcuiated in step #1 by muttipiying by the factor of 0/26 (2071179), or @ greater factor if the particular assembly design requires a lessor stress level 4, Enter the K-Series Economy Table and select the proper joist for the calculated load requirement. 5. Insure that the K-Series Joist selected has a depth and load table weight per foot equal to, or greater than, the S-, + and/or H-Series joist listed in the U.L. Design. Joists used in roof assemblies must have a minimum depth of 10 inches (254mm). So that the proper K-Series Joist can be selected for ULL. Directory for this information, OPEN WEB STEEL JOISTS, K-SERIES OPEN WEB STEEL JOISTS, K-SERIES INTRODUCTION (Open Web Steel Joists, K-Series, were primarily devel- oped to provide structural support for floors and roofs of buiidings. They possess the following advantages: and features which have resulted in their wide use and acceptance throughout the United Siates and other countries, First and foremost, they are economical. For many types of buildings, no other products or methods for supporting floors and roofs can compete with steel joists. The advantages listed in the following para- {graphs all contribute to the overall economy of using Open Web Stee! Joists. K-Series Joists are light in weight - they possess an ‘exceptionally high strength-to-weight ratio in compar- son with other building materials. Coupled with their low price per pound, they contribute significantly to lower building costs. An additional economy stemming ‘rom their ight weight is the fact that the structural materials supporting the joists, such as beams and Joist Girders, columns, and the foundations them- selves, can therefore be lighter, thus leading to even greater economies. Open Web Steel Joists represent unitized construction. Upon arrival at the job site, the joists are ready imme- diately for proper installation. No forming, pouring, cur- ing, or stripping is required. Furthermore, their light \weight makes the erection procedure simple and fast. K-Series Joists are standardized regarding depths, spans, and load- carrying capacities. There are 64 sep- arate designations in the Load Tables, representing joist depths from 8 inches (203 mm) through 30 inches (762 mm) in 2" (51 mm) increments and spans through 60 feet (18,288 mm). Standard K-series Joists have a 2¥inch (64 mm) end bearing depth so that, regardless of the overall joist depths, the tops of the joist lie in the same plane. ‘The open webs in the joists permit the ready passage and concealment of pipes, ducts and electric conduits within the depth of the floor. In high rise buildings this can result in a lesser overall building height, which translates into considerable cost savings. As soon as 10 the joists are erected and bridged, wth ends fixed, a working platform is available for the immediate follow- up of allied trades; this allows field work to progress. rapidly and efficiently In combination with other materials, joists can provide fire resistive assemblies for both floors and roofs of buildings for nearly any hourly rating required. The pre- ceding pages on Fire Resistance Ratings with Stee! Joists provide detailed information on this subject. Stee! joists produce a permanent support system; they will not rot, nor can they be damaged by vermin, ‘There are no restrictions on the types, sizes or heights Cf buildings in which joists can be used. They can be found in the roof of the neighborhood drug store as well as in every floor of the tin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City OPEN WEB STEEL JOISTS, K-SERIES TOP CHORD EXTENSIONS AND EXTENDED ENDS ist extensions are commonly furnished to support a variety of overhang conditions. The two types are pictured below. The first is the TOP CHORD EXTENSION or “S” TYPE, which has only the top chord angles extended. The second is the EXTENDED END or “R” TYPE in which the standard 2%” (64 mm) end bearing depth is maintained over the entire length of the extension. The “S” TYPE extension is so designated because of its Simple nature whereas the “A? TYPE involves Reinforcing the top chord angles. The specifying professional should be aware that an “S° TYPE is more eco- ‘nomical and should be specified whenever possible. ‘The following load tables for K-Series TOP CHORD EXTENSIONS and EXTENDED ENDS have been developed as an aid to the specifying professional. The black number in the tables is the maximum allowable uniform load in pounds per linear foot (Newton/Meter). The red number is the uniform load which will produce an approximate deflection of L1/240, where L1 is the length of the extension. The load tables are applicable for uniform loads only. If there are con- Centrated loads and/or non-uniform loads, a loading diagram must be provided by the specifying professional on the structural drawings. In cases where itis not possible to meet specific job requirements with a 2%" (64 mm) deep "R’ type extension (refer to “S" and “" values in the Extended End Load Table), the depth of the extension must be increased se provide geste loat-caryirg caoacty Ite sci diagram fo any consiton nt shown. manvfactna When TOP CHORD EXTENSIONS or EXTENDED ENDS are specified, the allowable deflection and the bracing requirements must be considered by the specifying professional shoul be noted that ant TYPE exter must be specie when bung tala ats a 23" (04 mn) depth at the end of the extension.
