EXAMPLE 8.1 A salient pole generator without dampers is rated 20 MVA, 13.8 kV and has a direct axis subtransient reactance of 0.25 pu. The negative and zero-sequence reactances are 10.35 and 0.10 pu respectively. The neutral of the generator is solidly grounded. Determine the subiransient current in the generator and the line-to-line voltages for subtransient conditions, when a single line-to-ground fault occurs at the generator terminals with the generator operating unloaded at rated voltage. Neglect resistance. Solution Connection diagram for the LG fault is shown in Figure 8.3, 13.8 QOMVA, Vue = I38KVE Maggy = 035 on Figure 8.3 Connection diagram for Fxample 4.6, Since the generator is unloaded 20 pu For an LG fault, E, 120 yt 2, + Zy 0.1 + J0.38+ 70.25 = j4.29 pu and 1, ~ lA28 pu 837 KA Bxi38 =~ 0429 x0,837=— j3.59kA ‘The symmetrical components of the voltage from point a to ground are TZ, = 1 ~ (f1428) x 0.25 1 = 70.3575 = 0.6425 pu =A gly = 4/1428) x j035 = -0.5 pu Vig = -lgZo = ~-11.428) x 0.1 = -0.1425 pu Line-to-ground voltages are Vi= Vig t OV, + ay = 0.1425 + 0,64252240° ~ 0.52120° = 0.1425 ~ 0.3213 0.5864 + 0.25 - 70.433 0.2143 ~ 70.9894 pu V.=V,+a¥, +a, = -0.1425 + 0.64252120° - 0,52240° = -0.1425 ~ 0.3213 + 0.5564 ~ 0.25 + 0.433 = 0.2143 + 0.9894 pu Line-to-line voltages: VV, ~ V, = 0.2143 + j0.9894 = 1.012277.78° V,.=V, - V, = 19788 = 1.97882-90° V=V, ~V~ 0.2143 + 70.9894 = 1.0122102.22° Since the generated voltage-to-neutral F’, was taken as 1 pu, the above line-to-line voltages are also expressed in per unit of the base voltage to neutral. 13.8 V., = 1.012277.78" x 35 = 806277.78° kV V,.= 1.97882-90° x 15.7642-90" kV 13.8.
