Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent danger zones being
reached by the lower limbs:
Establishes values for safety distances to avoid injuries of the lower limbs for
persons of 14 years of age and above where it can be reasonably foreseen that the
lower limbs will be used for reaching danger zones. If persons below 14 years of
age are to be taken into account the safety distances to prevent danger zones
being reached by the upper limbs shall always be derived from the relevant tables
of EN 294. The safety distances apply when adequate safety can be achieved by
distances alone. The given safety distances will not provide sufficient protection
against certain hazards, for example ejection of objects, emission of substances
and radiation. For such hazards additional or other measures need to be taken.
The safety distances protect persons against injuries of the lower limbs caused by
a reasonably foreseeable reach towards danger zones without additional aid and
under the conditions specified. For certain applications there are justifiable reasons
to deviate from these safety distances. Standards dealing with these applications
shall indicate how an adequate level of safety can be achieved.

Safety of machinery - Safety distances to prevent danger zones being

reached by the upper limbs:

This standard establishes values for safety distances to prevent danger
zones being reached by the upper limbs of persons of 3 years of age and above.
The distances apply when adequate safety can be achieved by distances alone.
The safety distances protect those persons who try to reach danger zones without
additional aid and under the conditions specified for the different reaching
situations. This standard need to be applied to machinery which is covered by
certain electrical standards in which specific testing procedures are laid down, e.g.
using the test finger. For certain applications there are justifiable reasons to deviate
from these safety distances. Standards dealing with these applications shall
indicate how an adequate level of safety can be achieved.

Safety of machinery - Minimum gaps to avoid crushing of parts of the human
body:
The object of this standard is to enable the user of this standard (e.g.
standard makers, designers of machinery) to avoid hazards from crushing zones. It
specifies minimum gaps relative to parts of the human body and is applicable when
adequate safety can be achieved by this method. This standard is applicable to
risks from crushing hazards only and is not applicable to other possible hazards,
e.g. impact, shearing, drawing-in. One method of avoiding the hazard of crushing
of parts of the human body is to make use of the minimum gaps in this standard. In
specifying minimum gaps a number of aspects have to be taken into consideration,

such as accessibility of the crushing zones; - anthropometric data, taking into

account ethnic groups likely to be found in European countries; - technical and
practical aspects. If these aspects are further developed the current state of the art,
reflected in this Standard, could be improved.

Safety of machinery-Guards-General requirements for the design and
construction of fixed and movable guards:
This European Standard specifies general requirements for the design and
construction of guards provided primarily to protect persons from mechanical
hazards. The standard applies primarily to machines which are manufactured after
the date of issue of this standard. Attention is drawn to the use of guards to
minimise exposure to non-mechanical hazards. The requirements are applicable if
fixed and movable guards are used. The standard does not cover those parts of
guards which actuate interlocking devices. These are covered in EN 1088. This
standard does not provide requirements for special systems relating specifically to
mobility and ability to lift loads like rollover protective structures (ROPS) and fallingobject protective structures (FOPS).

Safety of machinery- Prevention of unexpected start-up:
Specifies built-in safety measures aimed at preventing unexpected machines
start-up to allow safe human interventions in danger zones. This standard applies
to unexpected start-up from all types of energy source i.e.: - power supply, e.g.
electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic; - stored energy due to, e.g. gravity, compressed
springs; - external influences, e.g. from wind.

Man-machine interface(MMI) - Actuating principles:
This standard establishes general actuating principles for manually operated
actuators forming part of the man-machine interface associated with electrical
equipment, in order to: - increase the safety (e.g. of persons, property,
environment) through the safe operation of the equipment; - facilitate the proper
and timely operation of the actuators. These principles apply, not only for the
operation of electrical equipment, machines, or complete plant under normal
conditions, but also under fault or emergency conditions.
