Discussion 3.1
I think that it is vital to be aware and in tune with the setting prior to writing a grant proposal. The
setting Cuban describes in the textbook is the total opposite of the setting where I work. Cubans
setting is Silicon Valley and it consists of students that have parents that are employed earning a good
pay check and technology. The setting where my technology grant proposal would be implemented if
funded is the complete opposite of what Cuban describes. Lamar Middle School is a Title 1 Priority
School that consists of approximately 1,400 students. All of the students get a free breakfast and free
lunch. 98.6% of the population is Hispanic/Latino, .07% White, 1.13% Asian Pacific Islander, and 0.2%
Black. A lot of my students have parents that do not work and several that Title I schools are defined as
campuses with a student population of at least 40 percent low-income. As far as these factors affecting
the success of my proposed technology improvement or initiative, I really dont know what to think the
decision makers on the grant committee will decide. I would hope they would take into consideration
the demographics and where these students are coming from and want to help prepare them for their
futures. The students at the school I teach at are not fortunate enough to be exposed to different types
of technological devices and tools, therefore I think that schools would be one of the places where they
could be exposed to these things.
