TeachingEnglish Mistakes and Ladders Test your spelling, and have a bit of board game fun, with our Spelling Snakes and Ladders game. You can use it as a fun warm up, filler or cooler activity. There are 200 word and picture cards (8 per A4 sheet) to test your or your students’ spelling. They cover a range of themes including People, Places, Work & Study, House & Home, Food and Drink, so you can use them all or simply choose the words/spellings you want to test. Print out the sheets and cut out the cards you want to use. If you only have a short time, there's a smaller version of the game board to play on. If you have more time, try the game board with more squares. We've provided you with a dice and counters too. Simply follow the instructions on the attached sheet to make them. Objective Get to the finish before your opponents, correctly spelling any question words as you progress. Ac rt Faia PU) Created by Cambridge English Online Ltd. © British Council http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk TeachingEnglish CoA CoM LEN Fold the question cards in half along the dotted line, so that you hide the spelling. Only the pictures should be visible. Get your dice and counters ready too. The first person to roll a 6 on the dice starts. Move your counter according to how many spots are facing up on your dice when it stops rolling. If you roll a 3, then move forward 3 spaces on the board. If you land on a square with a (?) on it, you must answer a question. One of your opponents (or teacher) will show you the picture side of the card. Try to spell the word. If you are not sure what the picture is, the person holding the card can help you, but without telling you how to spell the word. The person holding the card can read the word aloud to help you too. Correct answers If you are on a ladder question square and you get the spelling correct, you can climb the ladder to the square at the top of the ladder. This can really help you. If you are on a snake question square and you get the spelling correct, you Stay where you are. You have avoided sliding down the snake! Wrong answers If you are on a ladder question square and you get the spelling wrong, you stay where you are. If you are on a snake question square and you get the spelling wrong, you slide down the snake to the square where its tail is. Ssssorry! Ideas If you want to test other spellings, why not make your own picture & word cards. Just follow the style of ours. If you don't want to play the game, you can just look at the pictures and try to spell the word by yourself.
