KATA PENGANTAR
Puji syukur kami ucapkan kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, karena atas Rahmat dan
karunia-Nya kami dapat menyusun modul ini yang berjudul Modul Bahasa
Inggris Vocabulary Games And Listening (Theory).
Dalam proses penyusunan modul ini, tim penyusun mengalami banyak
permasalahan. Namun, berkat arahan dan dukungan dari berbagai pihak akhirnya
makalah ini dapat diselesaikan tepat pada waktunya. Pada kesempatan ini, dengan
segala kerendahan hati, penyusun mengucapkan terima kasih kepada Dosen
Pembimbing Bahasa Inggris, yang telah membimbing kami dalam proses
penyusunan modulini.
Penyusun menyadari modul ini masih belum sempurna, baik dari isi maupun
sistematika penulisannya. Maka dari itu, penyusun berterima kasih apabila ada

A. Definisi
Vocabulary (kosa kata) adalah perbendaharaan kata yang berarti
semua kata yang digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris, vocabulary (kosa kata)
harus dikuasai agar mudah dalam menggunakan bahasa inggris, baik
pembuatan kalimat maupun percakapan.
Kosakata (vocabulary) seseorang didefinisikan sebagai himpunan
semua katakata yang dimengerti oleh orang tersebut atau semua katakata
yang kemungkinanakan digunakan oleh orang tersebut untuk menyusun
kalimat baru. Penambahan kosakata seseorang secara umum dianggap
merupakan bagian penting, baik dari proses pembelajaran suatu bahasa
ataupun pengembangan kemampuan seseorang dalam suatu bahasa yang
sudah dikuasai.
B. Macam Vocabulary
Vocabulary (kosa kata) ada beberapa macam antara lain
a. Vocabulary produktif (kosa kata yang sering digunakan)
Dikatakan produktif karena vocabulary (kosa kata) ini selalu dipakai
dalam bahasa Inggris. Ciriciri vocabulary produktif adalah
vocabulary (kosa kata) yang sering didengar atau tidak asing
terdengarnya. Vocabulary produktif juga biasanya mudah untuk
dimengerti arti dan maknanya.Contoh :car (mobil).
b. Vocabulary tidak produktif (vocabulary yang ada, tetapi jarang
digunakan)
Vocabulary tidak produktif adalah jenis vocabulary (kosa kata) yang
jarang dipakai dalam pembuatan kalimat atau percakapan dalam
bahasa Inggris. Vocabulary (kosa kata) ini kadang sukar untuk
dimengerti karena vocabulary (kosa kata) ini jarang dipakai dalam
kehidupan seharihari. Contoh :Ambulance (Ambulan).
Vocabulary (kosa kata) menurut http://grammar.about.com ada
beberapa macam antara lain
a. Vocabulary Active

An active vocabulary is made up of the words readily used and


clearly understood by an individual when speaking and writing.
Contrast with passive vocabulary.
Martin Manser notes that an active vocabulary "consists of the
words that [people] use frequently and confidently. If someone asks
them to make up a sentence containing such and such a word--and
they can do it--then that word is part of their active vocabulary."
In contrast, Manser says, "a person's passive vocabulary consists of
the words whose meanings they know--so that they do not have to
look the words up in a dictionary--but which they would not
necessarily use in ordinary conversation or writing" (The Penguin
Writer's Manual, 2004).
Examples and Observations:
"An active vocabulary covers all those words people need to use and
have no reservations about using to communicate with others on an
everyday basis. The range of people's active vocabulary is a unique
reflection of their sociocultural position and the range of discursive
practices engaged in. In other words, it depends on the range of
relations people contract as a part of everyday existence, over a
lifetime. Except for people who frequently make contact with the
specialist meaning systems of professions or of other special
knowledge categories, most people's active words are high frequency
words in the language and need little stimulus to activate them in the
mental lexicon. They are ready for use in incoming and outgoing
messages, with no noticeable effort."

Developing an Active Vocabulary:

- "Educationists believe that using vocabulary in communicative


tasks is more beneficial to developing active vocabulary than
requiring learners to memorize isolated words, or leaving them to
their own devices."

- "While studies agree that knowledge of vocabulary is important for
developing reading skills, they also show it is normally extensive
reading that helps develop a wide vocabulary."

Graded Knowledge of Words :
"The active vocabulary obviously consists of words that we know
'better' than those that constitute our passive vocabulary. The same
distinction holds for native speakers, who also actively use only a
subset of the words they are familiar with. Another instance of
graded knowledge of words is the fact that, even as native speakers,
we often only know that we have heard or read a certain word
before, but do not know what it means."
b. Vocabulary Passive
A passive vocabulary is made up of the words that an individual
recognizes but rarely uses when speaking and writing. Also known
as recognition vocabulary. Contrast with active vocabulary.
According to John Reynolds and Patricia Acres, "Your passive
vocabulary is likely to contain more words than the active one. One
way to improve the range of the vocabulary in your own writing is to

try to transfer words from your passive to the active vocabulary"


(Cambridge Checkpoint English Revision Guide, 2013).
Examples and Observations :
"A passive vocabulary . . . includes the words stored in verbal
memory that people partially 'understand,' but not well enough for
active use. These are words that people meet less often and they may
be low frequency words in the language as a whole. In other words,
activating them takes longer and it demands greater stimulus than
most textual contexts provide. Words stop being passive if people are
regularly contracting relations that activate them, since this lowers
the amount of stimulus needed to put them to use. A facility in using
the words develops. Again constraints of another kind in the
extralinguistic context may also restrict the active use of some
words. This can happen even when words are available for active
use in principle, such as cultural taboo words that most people know
but rarely use outside certain settings."

"Media saturation may . . . provide what Dennis Baron called a
'passive lingua franca.' We all understand what we hear on the radio
or see on TV, giving us a passive vocabulary, but that doesn't mean
that we use that vocabulary actively in writing or speaking."

How to Estimate the Size of Your Vocabulary
"Take your dictionary and peruse 1 per cent of its pages, i.e. 20
pages of a 2,000-page dictionary, or every hundreth page (you need
to take a range of letters of the alphabet). Note down how many
words: (a) you are confident that you would regularly use; (b) you
would recognize and understand if you read or heard them. Be
brutally honest with yourself! Then multiply your totals by 100, to

give a first approximation of your likely active and passive


vocabularies."

C. Tingkat Vocabulary
Ada tiga tingkat kosakata yaitu dasar, menengah, dan lanjutan.
a. Kosakata dasar
Adalah katakata yang mudah untuk dipelajari. Biasanya terdiri dari
katakata sederhana seperti orang, binatang atau halhal di dalam
kelas. Dalam tingkatan ini akal yang terlibat. Hal ini penting untuk
mendapatkan kesuksesan dalam belajar bahasa bila siswa memiliki
kekuatan menghafal kosakata yang diajarkan.
b. Intermediate (menengah).
Kontekstual seperti makanan, pakaian, pekerjaan, tubuh manusia,
pendidikan dan pemerintahan. Kamus dalam kasus ini sangat
berguna untuk mendapatkan arti atau penjelasan.
c. Kosa Kata lanjutan.
Dalam tingkat siswa akan belajar kosa kata baru yang lebih sulit dari
sebelumnya. Kamus bahasa Inggris menjadi sangat penting dalam
kasus ini.

D. Sifat Vocabulary ( Kosa kata )


Dalam pembelajaran bahasa, khususnya bahasa Inggris sebagai
bahasa kedua, para siswa perlu menguasai kosa kata. Kosakata yang lebih
dikuasai oleh siswa akan membuat kinerja mereka lebih baik dalam
semua aspek belajar bahasa. Kosakata merupakan komponen penting dari
bahasa.
Kosa kata adalah komponen bahasa yang paling berkuasa. Dalam
menggunakan bahasa, siswa yang kaya kosa kata akan berhasil dalam
kemampuan keterampilan ekspresi: berbicara dan menulis, dan
keterampilan reseptif: mendengarkan dan membaca. Tetapi mereka yang

miskin dalam kosa kata akan mendapatkan masalah dalam keterampilan


tersebut.
Kosa kata adalah kumpulan katakata atau frase dan daftar katakata
dalam buku teks bahasa, biasanya abjad diatur dan dijelaskan atau
didefinisikan. Kosa kata adalah jumlah kata yang bila digabungkan akan
membentuk bahasa. Kosakata berisi katakata untuk mengekspresikan
pikiran seseorang, pendapat dan ide. Orang tidak akan dapat
berkomunikasi tanpa bahasa dan bahasa tidak akan pernah ada tanpa
kosakata.
Karena kita belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, kita harus
menguasai dan memahami banyak keterampilan. Ini benarbenar
menunjukkan bahwa kosakata memegang peranan penting dalam bahasa
Inggris.
