PROBLEM STATEMENT
The company X desires to invest in setting an acetone from isopropanol plant or a methyl isobutyl
ketone (MIBK) from acetone plant. As a consultant company, you wish to bid for the respective
project. You as a design consultant are required to propose the corresponding plant design with
minimum production rate of 100,000 metric tonne/year. The design should consider the economic,
safety and environmental aspects. The company X will appoint the potential consultant based on the
most feasible design proposal. In preparing the design proposal/report, you must include the
following criteria:

Process background

Market analysis

Site location
iv)
Mass balance
v)
Energy balance
vi)
Process simulation (ASPEN PLUS)
vii)
Environmental and safety consideration
The report must include:

Process introduction, process background, process details (chemistry, kinetics,

thermodynamics) and process selection.
PFD and stream table corresponding to PFD
Supply and demand study, and market analysis
Site selection and site location study
Physical and chemical data properties, environmental and safety consideration (MSDS),
waste treatment (description of waste treatment facility)
Detailed mass and energy balance
Process simulation (ASPEN PLUS) and results comparison between simulation and manual
calculation

Information
This task is assigned to a group of four (4) or five (5) members. Your work will be overseen by two
(2) supervisors whom are from industry as well as faculty. Meeting with the supervisors must be
scheduled and managed by your team.
