This document provides a review for Lab Practical I covering four topics: 1) Enzymes and biological indicators of positive and negative tests, 2) Microscopy and identification of organelles in various cells and organisms, 3) Osmosis, diffusion, and predicting diffusion rates and water movement, and 4) Stages of mitosis and meiosis in plant and animal cells and identification of asci in Sordaria sp. indicating crossing over.

substrate. Identify biological indicators. What color indicates a positive test? negative test?
2. Microscopy and cells
Parts of the microscope (light and stereo)
Identify organelles of the animal and plant cell based on the cell models. Identify and classify the following organisms as well as their organelles: a) Volvox b) Protococcus c) Scenedesmus d) Trichonympha e) Elodea f) Amoeba g) Onion h) Potato i) Carrot j) Compare and contrast slides treated with specific enzymes to remove specific cellular components.
3. Osmosis and Diffusion
Identify biological indicators. What color
indicates a positive test? negative test? Describe the influences on diffusion rates. Given an example, predict the diffusion of a molecule. Identify tonicity of a given solution. Given the tonicity, predict the osmosis of water if a plant or animal cell is placed in that specific solution.
4. Mitosis and Meiosis
Identify the stages of plant and animal cell
mitosis. Identify cellular structures germane to each stage.
