Strengths:
* Continuity of care for women/families with English as the second language.
* Culturally aware ( nutritional awareness)
* Reduces fear
* Reduces the risk of error due to good communication between the woman and the midwife.
* Obstetric care is reduced to a minimum.
* Demand for midwifery-led pregnancy and childbirth care.
* Facilitating safe, supported and positive experiences for women as a result of evidence-based
care.
* Promotes womens satisfaction through collaborative participation in decision making.
* Promote life style choices that will benefit women, babies and families.
* Provide attention to teenage pregnancy, smoking cessation, drug awareness and domestic
violence.
* Providing balanced and consistent information for women and their families.
* A clear referral protocol/policy and a well-identified referral mechanism (standard referral form)
Weaknesses:
* Limited staff. New staff not speaking the language.
* Staffing difficulties when one or more midwives are sick.
* Medicare may not cover some women under visa classes
* Vulnerable to litigation.
* Funding shortage
* Possible lack of support from public/private hospitals
* Possible lack of support from medical practitioners/obstetricians
Threats:
* Lack of funding may cause closure
* Litigation may also cause closure
* Other birthing centres in the area being opened by midwives
* Government intervention into midwifery practice
Opportunities:
* Reduces Mental Health burden in the community
* If successful the clinic could expand or be built in other areas.
* Reduces hospital overcrowding.
* Be a part of a super clinic
