IMPORTANT: New GRE Format and Content Planned for

October 2002
Effective October 1, 2002, the GRE General Test will no longer include the multiple-choice Analytical
section. The multiple-choice Analytical section will be replaced by a mandatory Analytical Writing
Measure (AWM) essay section. The multiple-choice Verbal and Quantitative sections will remain
unchanged.
The AWMcurrently offered as a separate, optional exam called the Analytical Writing Assessment
(AWA)consists of two essays: one requiring the test taker to express and support a position on an issue,
and one requiring the test taker to critique the logic of an argument.
Unlike the Verbal and Quantitative sections, the AWM will not use computer scoring. Instead, the essays
will be scored by two readers, using a 6-point holistic scale. While you will still receive your unofficial
Verbal and Quantitative scores at the test center, you will not receive your AWM score for 1015 days
following the test administration.
