Facts about River Cauvery

1. The origin of the river is at Talakaveri, Kodagu in Karnataka.


2. Cauvery then flows generally south & east through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and across the
southern Deccan plateau, eventually emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
3. It has many tributaries including the Shimsha, the Hemavati, the Arkavati, Honnuhole,
Lakshmana Tirtha, Kabini, Bhavani River, the Lokapavani, the Noyyal and the Amaravati River.
4. After the river leaves the Kodagu hills and flows onto the Deccan plateau, it forms two islands,
Srirangapatna and Shivanasamudra.
5. First comes the Srirangapatna which forms the sangam.
6. At Shivanasamudra the river drops 98 metres, forming the famous Shivanasamudra Falls
known separately as Gagana Chukki and Bhara Chukki.
7. Three kilometers away from Srirangapatna, the Cauvery is the basis for the Ranganthittu Bird
Sanctuary.
8. The river enters Tamil Nadu through Dharmapuri district leading to the flat plains where it
meanders.
9. Cauvery is considered to be as sacred as the Ganges throughout its course, with the same
power to wash off all ones sins.
10. Cauvery is joined by many rivers, the most important ones being Kummahole, Hemavathi,
Lakshmanatirtha, Shimsha etc., before it flows into the Bay of Bengal in Thanjavur district in
Tamil Nadu.
