May 1643.[19] Besides a grant of three roods and twelve rods, he had other grants
in Dedham and owned land in Wrentham, Medfield and Natick.[20]
He never held any office, and the town records show his attendance at town
meeting but once in several years, and then on an occasion of considerable
excitement in relation to making alterations and additions to the meetinghouse.[ 21]
However, he was among those signing on 1 January 1644[/5?], saying they would
support a free school in Dedham, the first free school in New England.[22]
Johns will, dated 3 October 1682, gave his three children, Samuel, John and
Elizabeth all his wearing apparell. Elizabeth also received two cows, his bed and
chest and its contents, his land lying near the Falls, in the dividend called Natick
Dividend. . . and one booke of Mr. Burroughs, called Gospel Conversation. John
was given all his land in Wrentham, a lot in Meadfield Dividend, his looms,
four sleays and one wheel wth ye blades as well as a book called Sound
Believer. His houselot went to son Samuel, plus land on Wigwam Plain,
meadows at Fowle Meadows, eight acres at Ragged Plaine and all common rights
in lands. Witnessed by Nathaniel Sterns and Thomas Metcalf, it was proved on 3
November 1682. His inventory, dated 4 November 1682, totalled 153 11s.
Johns autograph appears at the end of Burleighs transcription.[ 23]

Burleigh, Guild, 26, surely taken from Calvin Guild, Descendants of John Guild, 7. Calvin
was Samuel's great-grandson, so may well have had family records. However, the dates of birth
which he gives are apparently a misreading of Old Style dates, the months given numerically. But he
gives the death date as 1 Jan. 1730, not 1 March, and other death dates in his record give the months
correctly. Perhaps the records he used spelled the months out in the death records. The diary of Rev.
Samuel Dexter of Dedham as transcribed in the Register 14 (1860):203, notes on 6 Jan. 1729/30 the
late death of an Ancient, worthy & serviceable Gentmn Capt. Samll Guild aged 83. A note
identifying Samuel contained information from his great-grandson, Caleb Guild. This death date is
not found in either Hills or Hansons Dedham vital or church records.

vii. BENJAMIN GUILD, born 25 May 1664;[44] must have died before his fathers will.
2. JOHN2 GUILD, (John1), son of John and Elizabeth (Crooke) Guild, was born at
Dedham, Massachusetts, on 29 November 1649. He was baptized there on 2
December 1649. He died on 24 January 1722/3 in his 72nd year and was buried at
the Centre Cemetery in Wrentham, Massachusetts.[45] He married at Dedham on
22 May 1677 SARAH FISHER[46] who was born at Dedham on 27 October 1658,
daughter of Anthony and Joane (Faxon) Fisher.[47] She was living on 11 January
1714/5 but probably not on 6 February 1717 (see below).
Wrentham was established as a town in 1673. John moved there, perhaps
about 1681,[ 48] and inherited in 1682 all my [the fathers] land lying in
Wrentham, as well upland as meadow, as also my lott near Meadfield.[ 49] In 1685
he was one of the first five selectman elected when the town was finally organized
after having been abandoned during King Philips War.[ 50]
John Guild was one of the ten men who organized the Original
Congregational Church of Wrentham on 3 April 1692,[ 51] and he was elected
deacon on 7 December 1707.[52]
John was a witness to the purchase of land from the Indians at Lancaster in
1701.[ 53] On 31 January 1706 John Guile and Sarah his wife of Wrentham were
among the heirs of Anthony Fisher selling a dwelling house and three acres of
land in Dedham to William Avery, Jr., of Dedham, blacksmith.[ 54]
Wrentham Proprietors Records have not been searched for land grants to John
Guild. On 31 December 1714 John Guild of Wrentham, husbandman, and Sarah
his wife mortgaged to the trustees of the Province of Massachusetts Bay for 50
their sixty acres of land with a dwelling house in Wrentham. It was discharged on
29 December 1721.[ 55] Then on 6 February 1717 John Guild Senr of Wrentham,
44
for parental love, etc., gave to his son John Guild sixty acres, including the
burying place, and many other pieces of land, including his dwelling house and
barn, excepting the east end of the house during his lifetime,[ 56] which implies that
his wife Sarah was no longer living.
Children of John and Sarah (Fisher) Guild, the first two born at Dedham, the rest at
Wrentham:[ 57]
i. BETHIAH3 GUILD, born 4 Oct. 1678;[ 58] living at Attleborough, Mass., 15 April
1735;[ 59] married at Wrentham 7 Jan. 1702/3 Samuel Lean or Sears,[60] but he
was actually named SAMUEL LANE.[ 61] No children of a Samuel Lean or Sears
with wife Bethia(h) appear in online databases such as FamilySearch and
WorldConnect, but Samuel Lane and wife Bethiah had at least three children at
Dorchester, Mass., in 1707, 1711, and 1713.[ 62] Samuel was born at Hingham,
Mass., 16 March 1677/8, son of John and Mehitable (Hobart) Lane,[63] and
died at Attleborough, Mass., 7 or 17 Dec. 1726, leaving a widow Bethiah as
well as sons John and Ebenezer who all agreed on the division of the real
estate on 15 April 1735.[ 64] See this authors article on this family in The
American Genealogist, vol. 83 (2009).
ii. SARAH GUILD, born 30 Oct. 1680;[ 65] died at Wrentham 7 Dec. 1682.[66]
iii. SARAH GUILD, born 2 June 1683;[ 67] died 30 July 1757 in her 75th year, as
widow Sarah Perry, said to be formerly wife of Capt. Robert Blake; buried in
the Centre Cemetery at Wrentham;[68] married (1) at Wrentham 7 Jan. 1702/3
56
ROBERT BLAKE, the same day her sister Bethiah married.[69] Capt. Robert
Blake, born ca. 1675, son of John and Bridget (___) Blake,[ 70] died at
Wrentham 4 Oct. 1735 in his 60th year and was buried in the Centre Cemetery
there.[71] Sarah married (2) at Wrentham 30 March 1738 NATHANAEL
PERRY.[72] This cannot be Nathaniel Perry of Rehoboth, eldest son of
Nathaniel and Sarah (Carpenter) Perry, born there 2 April 1691, died there 13
Aug. 1768.[ 73] He m., int. at Rehoboth 25 Oct. 1714, Patience Butterworth, so
she would be the widow Patience who died at Rehoboth 27 Nov. 1771.[ 74] In
1749 the court provided a guardian for him, calling him non compos mentis. At
one point he was violent, having stabbed his wife, and he was chained. But the
records never name her. He was still living as of 5 Aug. 1760, when an
account refers to son Anthony taking care. . . of his Mother in the Time of her
Sickness.[ 75] If Sarah died as a widow in 1757, and Nathaniel of Rehoboth left
a widow Patience, this is not the right Nathaniel. Nor can he be the Nathaniel
Perry of Easton, Mass., who sold land with his wife Mehetabel on 9 Sept.
1740,[ 76] unless the date of his marriage to Sarah is wrong.
iv. ELIZABETH GUILD, born 7 July 1685;[ 77] died Canterbury, Conn., 14 Nov.
1762;[ 78] married at Wrentham 25 May 1710 WILLIAM PUFFER,[79] born
Dedham, Mass., 17 July 1686, son of Richard and Ruth (Everard or Everett)
Puffer, died probably Medway in 1754.[ 80]
v. JOANNA GUILD, born 4 Nov. 1687[/8];[ 81] married at Wrentham 12 May 1715
SAMUEL KINGSBURY of Dedham,[82] born at Dedham 4 Nov. 1690, son of
Eleazer and Esther (Judson) Kingsbury,[83] died at Walpole on the Plain[84] 1
June 1744, called Deacon.[85]
69
vi. JOHN GUILD, born 7 Oct. 1690;[ 86] died at Wrentham 28 Jan. 1762 in his 72nd
year;[87] married (1) at Wrentham 21 June 1711 MERCY FOSTER,[88] born
Salem, Mass., 15 July 1689,[ 89] died 3 May 1730 in her 42d year and was
buried at the Centre Cemetery in Wrentham,[90] daughter of John and Mary
(Stuard) Foster;[91] married (2) at Wrentham 22 March 1731/2 PHEBE MAN,[92]
born 16 Feb. 1705/6, daughter of Theodore and Abigail (Hawes) Man.[93] She
died at Wrentham, called widow of John, 11 May 1790 in her 47th y. and
was buried in the Centre Cemetery there where the gravestone says May 7,
1790 in her 85th y.,[94] which is much more likely.
3. vii. JOSIAH GUILD, born 14 July 1694;[ 95] married DEBORAH ____.
viii. JUDITH GUILD, born 19 Sept. 1697;[ 96] died 22 Nov. 1774 in her 77th year; buried
Oakland Cemetery on Glebe St. in Taunton;[97] married at Wrentham 16 June
1720 NATHANIEL BRIGGS,[98] born at Taunton about 1698, died 14 Aug. 1773
or 1775 in his 75th year, buried at Oakland Cemetery there.[99]
ix. EBENEZER GUILD, born 9 Sept. 1700; baptized as Eleazer 13 Oct. 1700;[ 100]
died at Wrentham 3 Sept. 1701.[101]
3. JOSIAH3 GUILD (John2-1), son of John and Sarah (Fisher) Guild, was born at
Wrentham, Massachusetts, on 14 July 1694. He died at Keene, Cheshire County,

before 15 November 1697 when the sheriff summoned Anne Collicot of Boston,
widow, to again appear at the Court of General Sessions of the Peace in January
on a complaint of Elizabeth Plaisted and her daughter to answer for
lasciviousness acted at her house in Boston upon her own bed.[ 109] Unfortunately
probate records for John and his wife Elizabeth (Alger) Palmer do not identify a
daughter Ann.[ 110] Ann Collicutt married James Hill at Boston on 12 October
1738.[ 111]
Deborahs father, Richard3 Collicott, was born at Boston on 29 October 1673,
the son of Preserved2 and Deborah (Dowse) Collicott, and grandson of Richard1
and Thomasin (___) Collicutt.[ 112] Deborah Collicotts great-grandfather, Richard1
Collicott, had owned land in Dorchester that Nathaniel Man sold on 21 October
1706 to Josiahs cousin, Samuel Guild, and that Samuel in turn sold to Josiahs
brother-in-law Samuel Lane on 13 March 1717.[ 113] Nathaniel Man had apparently
acquired it through his wife, Elizabeth3 George,[ 114] as Richard1 and Thomasin
Collicott sold half of the farm to John George on 31 May 1675, and his widow
Thomasin sold the other half to Thomas George on 25 December 1691.[ 115] This
George family was close to the Lane-Guild family. On 29 March 1705 Richard2
(Nicholas1) George, brother of a John and father of another John and Thomas,
who had died,[ 116] sold his own sixty acres in the same neighborhood to Samuel
Lane for 100 and his commitment to care for Richard and his wife.[ 117] However,
although the land involved was close to the Wrentham line, none of the above
connections are enough to conclude that Deborah Collicott was the wife of Josiah
Guild.

June 1751 Josiah was of Stoughton, yeoman, when he and his wife Deborah sold
for 200 to Lemuel Kellock of Wrentham, sadler, seven pieces of land. The first
named was twenty acres in Wrentham along with his dwelling house, barn and
shop. One of the witnesses was James Guild.[126]
On 8 June 1753 Josiah signed what is called the Stoughton petition.[ 127] On
28 December 1753, part of Stoughton was annexed to Wrentham.[ 128]
On 26 October 1754 Josiah was again of Wrentham when he sold [gave] for a
valuable consideration to John Guild of Wrentham, presumably his brother,
twenty acres at Grate Brook, formerly Dorchester and Stoughton but now
Wrentham, bounding on the saw mill dam and ranging with the dam to the way
leading from Richard Guilds to Cobbs mill and on said way to John Guilds
land.[ 129] Probably this was part of the land Josiah and John had bought together
back in 1722.
Finally, on 8 December 1760 Josiah Guild of Wrentham, yeoman, and
Deborah his wife sold for 240 to [another soon-to-be son-in-law] Joseph Man of
the same, 150 acres in the 63rd lot in the 25th division, land in Wrentham,
formerly in Dorchester, in the right of Mr. Mather and George Lyon, on Hutsons
brook. Their son Dan Guild and Ebenezer Fisher witnessed.[ 130] As noted above,
they were dismissed from the church in Wrentham in May of 1761 on their way to
Keene.
Josiah had a strong tie to Keene, as his brother John was a proprietor of
Keene. At a meeting in Concord, Massachusetts, on 26 June 1734, John drew lot
#41.[ 131] Cheshire County deeds include records only for Johns sons Joseph Guild,
who died there on 24 September 1744 at age 31, and Benjamin Guild.[132] There
are no deeds for Josiah and Deborah.

WHEELER,[ 217] born 26 May 1748,[ 218] a New Style date. Her birth was
recorded at Groton, Mass., as 15 May 1748, daughter of Abraham and Hannah
(Woods) Wheeler.[ 219] Robert went to the Boston area after the Lexington
Alarm in 1775 and enlisted. Later he went up the Kennebec River to Canada
with Arnold, was at Ticonderoga in 1776, and in 1777 fought in the Battle at
Bennington, Vt.[ 220]
On 20 Sept. 1778 Robert Worsley of Marlborough purchased six acres in
the southwest corner of lot #69 for 24s as highest bidder.[ 221] On 5 Oct. 1779 he
purchased 100 acres in lot #48 there.[222] When he sold [mortgaged?] his part of
lot #69 on 18 March 1789, he was called housewright.[ 223] He is often
mentioned in the Journal of Abner Sanger, who lived at Dublin, N.H., in the
1790s.[ 224] On 13 March 1792 he purchased the north half of lot #47 and on 2
June 1801 sold it to Robert, Jr.[225] On 31 Jan. 1811 Jesse Worsley of
Marlborough purchased from his parents for $1000 lot #48 and the six acres at
the southwest corner of lot #69 in Marlborough, agreeing to supply Robert and
Abigail with a list of specific items annually, plus nursing and doctrine
[doctoring] and the southwest chamber in the house.[ 226] On 15 April 1827
Robert Worsley of Dublin petitioned for administration on his fathers estate,
and dower was ordered set off to Abigail on 5 May 1827.[ 227]

July 1783 at age 36.[329] Dan married (3) probably in early 1784 SARAH
FLETCHER,[330] born, perhaps at New Ipswich, New Hampshire, 27 September
1756, daughter of Thomas and Esther (Hoar) Fletcher.[ 331] She is said to have

Abner Sanger often mentioned Dan and his son Sim in his journal at Keene
in the 1770s.[ 333] In 1773 Dan Guild was corporal of a foot company at
Keene.[ 334] On 4 January 1775, he was one of five men in Keene chosen to be a
Committee of Inspection, and on 14 March 1776 he signed the Association
oath.[ 335] From 29 June to 11 July 1777 he was sergeant in Capt. Davis Howletts
company that marched from Keene to Fort Ticonderoga.[ 336] He was jailer and
high sheriff of Cheshire County and in 1785 purchased a pew in the new
meetinghouse at Keene.[337] In 1790 at Swanzey, Dan had two males over 16, three
under, and three females.[ 338]
Dan Guild of Swanzey made a will on 7 Dec. 1794 (proved 9 April 1795) in
which he named wife Sarah, children Simeon, Lydia Adams, wife of Asahel
Graves, John, Fanny, Dan, Thomas, and Rufus. Brother-in-law Josiah Fletcher of
New Ipswich, N.H., was to be guardian for the two youngest children, Thomas

executors.[ 339]

divorced wife of Benjamin Aldrich, which would explain why her marriage
record to Richard gives her surname as Knight. However, her first husband may
have been named James Aldrich.[ 385] Eleanor was born, probably at Cranston
about 6 February 1771,[ 386] died at Cranston on 24 September 1858 at age 87 years
7 months 18 days,[ 387] and was buried in the Nehemiah Knight Lot in Cranston.[ 388]
Considering the parents of Richards first wife, there seems to have been only
one William Wilbur in Smithfield in the mid to late 1700s. On 22 June 1764
Daniel Wilbore of Smithfield, husbandman, made his will naming wife Mary and
several children, including a son William (listed after a son Daniel) who had had
his portion, suggesting that he was over 21.[ 389] Daniel was born at Portsmouth,
Rhode Island, on 8 March 1701, the son of Benjamin and Mary (Kennecut)
Wilbore.[ 390] He married at Portsmouth on 2 April 1725 Sarah Fish, daughter of
Daniel Fish.[ 391] Thus Daniels son William was born after 1725 and before about
1743.[ 392] Daniel and Sarah also had a son named Benjamin, so Richard and
Orphas son Benjamin was named for an uncle and a great-grandfather.
No deed from Daniel to William was recorded at Smithfield, but on 4 March
1766, about the time Orpha was born, William Wilbour of Smithfield,
husbandman, purchased 85 acres, the farm where Ezekiel and Huldah Woodward
were then living in Smithfield.[ 393] Two months later, on 7 June 1766, William
mortgaged 40 acres of that farm to Jonathan Whipple of North Providence. Then
on 1 July 1771 he mortgaged 80 acres, probably the whole farm, again to
Jonathan Whipple. No wife signed either deed.[ 394] However, when William sold
59 acres of the homestead farm where I now dwell to Charles Angell on 29
April 1777, Williams wife Sarah signed. And she signed again when he sold 61

acres to Knight Dexter on 3 May 1777.[ 395] However, since Orphas father was of
Smithfield when she married, the family apparently stayed there, but no William
Wilbur (under any spelling) appears there in the 1790 census, and there is no
probate for either William or Sarah there.
Richard Guild served in the Revolution from Connecticut. The town of
Woodstock granted Richard 30 for articles supplied to him or his family,[ 396] he
having enlisted on 29 April 1777 in Capt. Paul Brighams Co., Col. John
Chandlers Regiment in the Connecticut line and served for three years.[ 397] This
regiment fought at Germantown, Pennsylvania, on 4 October 1777, wintered at
Valley Forge, fought at the Battle of Monmouth 28 June 1778, wintered at
Redding, Connecticut, stormed Stony Point 15 July 1779 and wintered at
Morristown, after which Richard was discharged on 4 April 1780.[ 398]
When he was married in 1785, Richard was living in Smithfield, and perhaps
one or two of his children were born there, but by 14 February 1789 he was living
in Providence, a butcher, when he first purchased land on the west side of the
Great Bridge in Providence from Nehemiah and Alice Arnold. It was on the south
side of High Street, adjacent to the Burying Ground.[ 399] On 18 November 1790 he
and John Perin, both butchers, purchased from Benjamin and Abigail Hodges a
triangular piece a little north of the road from the Great Bridge to Plainfield, about
a mile from the bridge.[ 400] Richard has not been found in the 1790 census, but
John Perrin had two males over 16 and five females in his household.[ 401] This
could include John and Richard, their wives, and Richards first three children.
When John and Richard sold their triangle of land to Nathan Williams on 22
March 1791, Johns wife was named Melicent and Richards wife Orpheas
made her mark.[ 402] On 11 April 1792 Richard bought another piece abutting the
first from Nehemiah and Alice Arnold.[ 403] Two years later, on 16 August 1794,
Richard, still called butcher, sold a small piece of land to one of his abutters,
Elisha Brown, the line running through the middle of a well. Elisha was not to sell
any shares in the well. This time Richards wife was called Orpa.[ 404]

through the middle of the Red House.[ 417] On 5 September 1826 Richard
purchased from Harriet Knight of Cranston for $10 a piece of land abutting that of
Eleanor.[ 418]
In 1830 at Cranston, Richard Guild had a male 1015, another 4050, himself
6070, two females 1520, and one 5060.[ 419] Richard was said to reside at
Providence, Rhode Island, in 1831,[420] but the author either meant the Providence
area or only knew where he had previously lived.
Richard Guilds estate was insolvent. At a court of 9 September 1837, Horace
Prior was made administrator, and household goods were set off to Eleanor R.
Guild, widow. The inventory was appraised on 5 September 1837.[ 421] On 13
September 1837 Eleanor R. Guild of Cranston, widow of Richard, sold for $500
to James Doran, a small lot and part of a dwellinghouse on the east side of the
road from Knightsville to Providence and another lot near the above, clearly the
land described above. A year later, on 19 October 1838, she quitclaimed on her
right of dower in a lot with a barn, six square rods, again to James Doran.[ 422]
In 1850 at Cranston, Eleanor Guild was age 78, living in the household of [her
son] James Aldrich, age 60, farmer, who had no wife with him.[ 423]
Eleanor made a will on 4 August 1858 calling herself widow of Richard
Guild. She gave all her personal estate now in possession of her son James
Aldrich to her grandson William H. A. Aldrich after James decease. She then
gave Jeremiah H. Aldrich $12 but specified no relationship. Daughter Alice
Burlingame was to have all the remainder of my personal estate. William H. A.
Aldrich was to be sole executor. The will was presented in court on 27 November
1858.[ 424]
Richards daughter Sophia, who died unmarried, made a will on 1 September
1865 naming her sister Sally Sheldon, widow of Joseph Sheldon, Mary Winsor,
wife of Serrill Winsor, Catherine and Eliza Smith, daughters of Alanson Smith
[sic], and three sisters, Esther Knight, Mary Guild, and Ann Johnson. All the rest
was to go to [her grandnephew] Nicholas S. Prior, and Henry A. Aldrich [nephew
William H. A. Aldrich] of Cranston was to be executor. It was presented in court
on 22 December and proved 12 January 1869.[ 425]

Alvin James Aldrich, George Aldrich Genealogy, 6 vols. (Cedar Rapids, Iowa: Service
Press & Litho Co., and Decorah, Iowa: Anundsen Publishing Co., 19711988), 1:68, says his
fathers name was Benjamin, which agrees with the fathers name on James death record. But at
4:15 this same Aldrich genealogy calls his father James and lists his children with Eleanor Rice
Knight as well as grandchildren, children of James and Martha (Guild) Aldrich. The will of James
Aldrich of Scituate, R.I., names James, son of his son Benjamin (abstract in Rhode Island
Genealogical Register 2 [1980]:184, from Scituate Probate, 5:7879), so Aldrich 4:15 must be in
error. In 1790 at Glocester, Benjamin Aldrich had no males under 16 in his household (1790 U.S.
Census, Glocester, Providence Co., R.I., roll 10, p. 237), but there was no James Aldrich listed as
a head of household. When Benjamin of Glocester died on 4 June 1829 (Providence Patriot, 6
June 1829, p. 3), administration was first granted on 29 Aug. 1829 to James Aldrich of Cranston,
but on 17 Oct. 1829 Benjamin B. Aldrich of Scituate was appointed administrator (Glocester
Probate, 4:195, 197). James Aldrich was listed as a grandson in the will of his maternal
grandfather Nehemiah Knight at Cranston, dated 8 Nov. 1806, proved 24 June 1808, and as a
nephew in the will of Eleanors brother Jeremiah Knight of Cranston, dated 10 May 1821
