Summary
Nikola Markovi
Superstition in Serbian army during the First World War
The authors research of the superstition in the Serbian army has been based upon the
diaries and memories of the Serbian soldiers in the First World War. Many stories and
explanation of various prophecies, as well as numerous magic spells for protection from
death were widely spread. During the war, attention was widely paid to signs, especially
dreams, which were foretelling the death to the soldiers, according to superstitious beliefs.
The research has confirmed the thesis that superstitious beliefs are much more present in
the times of the crises, especially during the wartimes. It could be presupposed that the
following, Second World War and stormy social and political events in 20th century made
superstition remain strong among the Serbs.
