ASSIGNMENT # 2
(Due August 29, 2016)

Note: All the problems should be answered with neat sketches in pencil.
1.

Design a connection to join two plates of size 20010 mm of grade E 250

to mobilize full plate tensile strength using site fillet welds, if (a) a lap joint
is used, (ii) a double-cover butt joint is used.

2.

A tension member consists of an ISMC 150 channel. Design and detail its
welded end connection to develop the full tensile strength of the member.
The length of the connection is limited to 150 mm. Assume shop welding.

3.

The main tie of a truss has to carry a factored load of 400 kN. Design a
suitable (a) single-angle section, (b) double-angle section connected on the
same side of the gusset plate, (c) double-angle section connected on the
both sides of the gusset plate, for this, provided M16 bolts of grade 4.6 are
used to connect the member with 10-mm gusset plates at the ends. Also,
design and detail the connections.

4.

Redo Problem # 3 if shop fillet welds are used (instead of the bolts) to
connect the main tie with the gusset plates at the ends.
