What is hysteria?
Hysteria is when an
exaggerated or
uncontrollable emotion
or excitement,
especially among a
group of people.
Hysteria with
McCarthyism:
The Mass Hysteria that
came with the Red
Scare and McCarthyism
had a huge impact on
this period in the
United States. Senator
Joseph McCarthy
exploited the nations
fear of communism for
what many believed to
be for his own gain.
Mass Hysteria was able
to occur because many
people did not want to
be accused of being
communist.
How was it
considered a mass
hysteria?
-If you were convicted
of being communist,
your reputation was
over.

-Because of a result of
many innocent people
being blamed. Some
committed suicide and
some even left the
country.
-Just to be associated
with someone who was
convicted of
communist acts would
ruin your career.
-The main reason why
is because over
thousands of
Americans lost their
jobs and businesses.
Why were Innocent
people being
blamed?
-The United States
wanted to convict
anyone they suspected
to be a communist.
-It was reported that
communist countries
had spies in the U.S.
-People felt that
anyone who was
convicted to be
communist would be a
threat to the country.

-McCarthy wanted to
get rid of any
communist acts.
-Everyone was blamed
even small children.
