are the largest ethnic group in the
Horn of Africa. As many as 500
people have been killed in the
protests between November 2015
and June as reported by Human
Rights Watch.

The inaugural CanKen 5K road

race was held on Sunday in Mississauga, Ont. in an effort to
strengthen Kenya-Canada relations through sport, business and
community. The 5K was dominated by the Toronto Olympic
Club as the event attracted some
of southern Ontarios top talent
featuring Kenyan and Ethiopian
teams.

Lilesa, the Olympic marathon silver medallist, performed the protest in Rio and said after the race
that If I go back to Ethiopia, I will
be killed. He has since arrived
in the United States on a special
skills visa and has not returned to
East Africa though his family remains in Ethiopia. A GoFundMe
page in his name has raised more
than US$160,000 for travel and
living costs.

At the front of the pack, Ethiopian

Hajin Tola won in 14:45 and performed a political gesture crossing
his wrists above his head in an X,
done in solidarity with the Oromo
people in his home country. The
protest is the fourth such notable
act by an Ethiopian at a race in the
past month.
How the protests got started
Olympic silver medallist Feyisa Lilesa was the first to make
headlines in August when he performed the protest in Rio in the
mens marathon. He feared for his
life following the race as the protest was directed at the Ethiopian
government.

Also in Sundays race was Ebisa

Ejigu who won the Quebec City
Marathon at the end of August
and also protested against the
Ethiopian government. Ejigu finished fourth on Sunday in 15:04.

Ethiopian Hirut Guangul makes powerful gesture in 4-peat

MOLINE As Hirut Guangul, of Ethiopia, crossed the Quad Cities Marathon finish line as the first woman overall for the
fourth consecutive year, she crossed her
arms above her head in an X.
hirut
Guanhul became the first QCM four-time
champion, but the moment became larger
than just her athletic achievement on Sunday morning.
I like this race, said Guanhul. Four-time
champion. Im very, very happy.
After the race, the 24-year-old said the X
is a way of protesting the human rights
abuses that are taking place in Ethiopia.
Guanhuls simple action is a brave and
powerful one that bypasses any language
barrier.
Hundreds of peaceful Ethiopian protesters
have been killed or arrested by the Ethiopian military this year. Protesters have demanded equality for the countrys Oromo
people, Ethiopias largest ethnic group that
has felt marginalized by the government as
it pushes them off their land before selling
it.
Ethiopian runner Feyisa Lilesa held up an
X with his arms as he won silver in the
marathon at the Rio Olympics. The gesture
has been used as a symbol of strength and
peaceful resistance.

Lilesa says he likely will not be able to return home after making the gesture of solidarity. The Oromos also have used the X
as a sign of their protest.
The Ethiopian government is killing my
people, so I stand with all protests anywhere, as Oromo is my tribe, Lilesa said at
an Olympic press conference. My relatives
are in prison, and if they talk about democratic rights they are killed.
Guangul joined the brave movement as she
won the womens marathon with a time of
2:44.25.
She won her first QC Marathon in 2012,
when she set the womens open course record of 2:35.07. Guanguls 2016 win earned
her $3,000 in prize money.
Guangul says she enjoys the Quad Cities
Marathon, and is happy to be back at the
race.
Kenyan Bizuwork Getahun Kasaye
(2:56.01, $1,500) placed second and Ethiopias Meseret Ali Basa (3:03.09, $1,000) was
third.
Jenna Fiorillo (3:16.03, $750) of West Cester, Pa., placed fourth as the top American
finisher.

At the Mississauga race, the first

three positions were awarded cash
prizes of $1,500, $750 and $500 in
both the mens and womens categories. Jane Murage was the womens race winner in 17:16. There
were a number of notable figures
on hand for the inaugural event
including Deputy Kenya High
Commissioner to Canada Ambassador Jane Onsongo.

The protests are being done in

response to the governments displacing of Oromo people outside
of Addis Ababa as the municipal
boundary of the capital city is extended into neighbouring areas.

The 1K kids dash encouraged the

next generation of runners to participate with a medal being awarded to all participants and trophies
going to the top three finishers.

Why the x gesture?

Ethiopian Government Lies about Poverty

Reduction: the Case of the Amhara Region

By D. K. Bimrew , Toronto Canada

Ever since it came to
power by way of armed struggle
in 1991, the Government of
Ethiopia had been implementing
agricultural led industrialization
(ADLI) development policy. The
government repeatedly declared
achievements of its policy in the
reduction of poverty are much
better than any previous rulers of the
country and any government in the
sub-Sahara region. The government
is not alone in this declaration.
Its bravados are endorsed by
international organizations. What
makes the endorsements by these
organizations unreliable is that they
are based on the data provided by
the government of Ethiopia which
is manipulated and doctored to
serve its self-serving interest.
Development in Ethiopia is not
only belonged to an economic
realm rather it an ideology to justify
authoritarian
rule.
Therefore,
development datas are cooked to
suit official nat articles of continued
growth.

Many international studies and the

reality on the ground showed the
agriculture-led-industrialization
policy
cannot
bring
real
development and reduce poverty.
As a result, after a quarter of its
implementations Ethiopia remains
one of the worlds poorest country.
More than 12 million people are
chronically or at least periodically
food insecure. According to the
World Bank 2012 report, population
below national poverty line in
Ethiopia is 38.9%. The poverty gap
index is estimated to be 7.8% while
it is 8.0% for rural areas and 6.9%
for urban areas.
Agricultural production, which is
the source of livelihood for eight
out of ten Ethiopians, is extremely
vulnerable to climatic conditions.
The causes of rural poverty are
many including wide fluctuations
in agricultural production as a
result of drought, ineffective and
inefficient agricultural marketing
system, underdeveloped transport
and communication networks,
underdeveloped
production
technologies, limited access of rural
households to support services,
environmental degradation and lack
of participation by rural poor people
in decision making that affect their
livelihoods.
Despite huge potential, Amhara
region is the poorest region in
Ethiopia. It is mainly caused by the
regime's deliberate discriminatory
economic policy towards Amhara
people. Amhara is one of the regions

affected by worst and often recurrent

drought. Poverty level in the region
is among the worst by most social
and human development indicators.
Many studies showed that highest
food poverty is found in Amhara
region. As land belonged to the
state it is subject to redistribution or
appropriation by the government.
Therefore, farmers do not have
tenure security that would give an
incentive for more production. The
authoritarian rule in Ethiopia has
further worsen the food insecurity
by creating a clientele network of the
party officials that would political
administers the rural communities.
To assess the extent and geographic
dimension of poverty in Amhara
region, the researcher used GIS and
Small Area Estimation techniques.

1. Small Area Estimation
Method
Various methods have been
used to construct geographically
disaggregated indicators of poverty
(Davis, 2003). The most common is
the small area estimation technique,
developed in a series of World
Bank researches and now applied
to a number of countries, such as
Ecuador, South Africa, Nicaragua,
Vietnam, Kenya, and Uganda. The
small area estimation (SAE) offers
a powerful approach to produce
statistically
reliable
poverty
estimates for small areas and is
the most widespread method for
mapping on national scales (WB et
al. 2009) cited in (Valerie, 2012).
The method combines detailed
household survey information with
population census data. The idea
is to use survey data to create a
predictive model for a dependent
variable that is available in the
survey but not in the census. The
independent variables included in
the model are common to both the
survey and the census data.
The small area estimation technique
uses regression models to predict
the welfare indicators for all
households covered by the census.
The methodology (Elbers, 2003)
contains three stages: zero, first and
second. In the zero stage variables
common to the survey and census
are identified, and the two data
sets are generally examined for
comparability, sampling strategies,
etc. In a first stage, regression
parameters are estimated based on
the variables that are common to
both the survey and the census. In
the second stage these parameter
estimates are taken to the census
data to predict the chosen welfare

measure for each population of parts of Amhara region. Relatively

Posted by: ecadforum October 18, 2016

NDP Foreign Affairs Critic, Hlne

the Subcommittee for International
Human Rights, Cheryl Hardcastle,
released the following statement
today:
New Democrats are deeply concerned
about the ongoing political and
human rights crisis in Ethiopia.
The country has been rocked by
deadly protests over several months,
resulting in the declaration of a sixmonth state of emergency, beginning
October 9th.NDP Statement on
situation in Ethiopia
Human Rights Watch has warned that
Ethiopian security forces have been
involved in the deaths of more than
500 people during demonstrations
in the past year. Government
limitations on press freedom and
civil society have compounded these
problems.

Canada is currently the third-largest

bilateral country donor in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is a Country of Focus for
Canadas development assistance.
In 2014-2015, Canada provided
over $108 million in international
development assistance to Ethiopia,
not including regional development
aid.
We urge the Government of Canada
to work with its allies to pressure
the Ethiopian government to
immediately resolve the situation
and protect civilians. The Ethiopian
government should reach out to and
engage all parties and opposition
groups in a peaceful, constructive
and inclusive dialogue.
Ethiopia is renowned for its rich
cultural traditions and is blessed
with over 80 different ethnicities.
All Ethiopians deserve peace,
security and a democracy that is
truly representative of all the peoples
within the country.

Irreecha and Woyane madness.

avenues of civilized discourse.

TPLF have many fancy ideas in its head

that they think gives them alternatives
when the shit hits the fan. Believe me
they discussed it, drew maps and thought
it all out. It gave them false reading of
success in its initial phase of conquest
and setting up the system. It led to
blunders as the years went by.

October 2nd, 2016 will be a day of

infamy in the history of our great nation.
Oct 2nd will stand along Yekatit 12,
1937 where the Fascist leader Graziani
ordered the massacre of over 30,000
Ethiopians in Addis Ababa and vicinity
due to an attempt on his life. We erected a
monument at Sidist Kilo to commemorate
that dark day. It is there both to remind us
about the price of losing sovereignty and
the consequences. No one has killed us
indiscriminately like that until the arrival
of Woyane.
It is sad but 42nd 2016 will equal in the
atrocity to that ugly day in 1937. October
2nd. millions were put in harms way,
and many hundreds died. There was no
questions hundreds of thousands were
traumatized. People celebrating freely
were in an instant made to flee for their
life not knowing where to. There were
mothers with children, pregnant women,
old men and women and toddlers that
came to wash the problems of last year
and hope and pray for a better one.
Irreecha festival is a happy event where
the elders give thanks if it was a happy
and prosperous year and pray to make
the coming one a better one. It has
been celebrated as far back as one can
remember. Nothing like what took place
that day has ever occurred.
The government set up search stations
on all roads leading to the event making
sure there are no weapons. The area was
encircled both by Oromia police and
Special Forces of the Woyane group.
No one can enter nor leave without their
knowledge.
The oromo region has been under siege
the last eleven months. The loss of life
would be staggering under normal
circumstances but we Ethiopians are
more concerned about how many instead
of why even one? For your information
close to nine hundred have died and
untold amount of young ones jailed in
one of the concentration camps Woyane
keeps. (Zuai, Bir Sheleko, Dedessa)
When confronted with the presence of all
that security force, the constant searching
and the memory of the last twelve months
state of siege of their region, to say the
Oromos and their friends and family
were not in a good holiday mood is a
valid assessment. It is also true the young
people arrived with their hands crossed
showing defiance against the system. It
is also a fact that Down with Woyane
was chanted so loud and often the hills
reverberated and the lake water rose.
There were two helicopters buzzing the

crowd and attempting to drop leaflets.

That added to the tension. The feeble
gesture by the regime to intimidate
and create fear has the reverse effect.
It angered the crowd. And the chant
Woyane Down drowned the valley.
On October 2nd 2016, on a clear day Abay
Tsehaye, Seyoum Mesfin, Debretsion
Gebre Mariam, Samora Yenus and friends
ordered their private Agazi Forces to
open fire on their own people that were
gathered to celebrate a cultural holiday.
They bear full responsibility to the loss
of life on that dark day. The doctors will
say death by bullet, death by drowning,
death by being trampled over and many
other reasons. The most obvious cause
for the death of our family members
is the TPLF Central Committee. They
killed our people because they demanded
Democracy in a supposedly free land.
The Woyane regime that controls our
country assembled the Special Agazi
Forces days ahead of time, camped them
in the hills and gave them authority
to use lethal means including tear gas
and automatic weapons on a crowd
numbering millions and that is confined
in a small open space. It is premeditated
plan when they brought armed soldiers to
control a crowd that they know was not
armed and has peaceful intentions other
than protest loudly.
What are we supposed to make of that?
The Prime Minister was quoted to have
said fifty-two killed due to stampede
and was in a rush to order three days of
mourning. The Woyane Media like EBC
and their stepchildren went viral on the
stampede angle. I have no idea who
they thought they could cover up mass
killing in the middle of the day.

The setting up of the Kilils worked like

a charm. EPRDF was the perfect tool
to give the illusion of Democracy. The
ethnic hatred actively being stocked
by the Front kept the population on the
edge where trust, loyalty, friendship and
empathy became stupid deeds. Fear is
not such a good tool, it runs out.
Ethiopia is a poor underdeveloped
country. TPLF found out it costs plenty
to have a standing Army that is one of
the largest in Africa, Federal Force,
Agazi Troops and Internal Security
apparatus. That did not leave much to
develop Tigrai for the coming divorce.
Let alone controlling the Nile all the way
to Gambela TPLF couldnt even hold on
to Welkait. On top of it the Oromos and
the Amharas finally figured out the scam
and decided to renew their love.
For TPLF to advocate divorce is not a
good course of action at the moment.
It has all of a sudden become a crazy
and stupid idea dreamed up by Kat
intoxicated blood drunk psychopath
that left his buddies in a big quandary.
What are our mini leaders supposed
to do? What they did was expose their
fear. They were easily unnerved and lost
control of the situation. It also shows the
Mafia group is not capable of analyzing a
given situation, weigh the pros and cons
and make an intelligent decision. There
is no one with leadership skills among
them. They did not rise to the position
they occupy being smart but rather being
ruthless, heartless and void of empathy
is how they did it. That works in a small
group setting but it is absolutely useless
when it comes to governing with any
legitimacy.
So today we have them on the ropes and
all we got to do is apply more punches
to relieve them from their misery. That is
what you would think. Twenty years of
Derg and twenty four years of Woyane
should make us an expert on what to do

If there was any semblance of Democracy

in Ethiopia the government that given
an order to fire on assembled mass of
people will be out of office in a minute.
The Woyane regime does not suffer such
consequences. It is answerable to no
one. It will continue killing until they
either subdue the population using any
and all atrocities or they are forced out
of power by the organized action of the
people. Woyane leaders think they have
no alternatives. Even if they had any the
Irreecha killing seems to have closed all

To those still singing Woyane tune of

division we say it is time we put a stop
to this emulation of Woyane culture of
division and hate. What the Ethiopian
situation is showing us today is the days
of ethnic grouping is not healthy and
leads to no good end. The solidarity of
the people of Gondar with the people of
Adama is what forced the mafia group
into the psychiatric ward. So what is with
this ethnic Bura Kereyo? What makes you
think the ethnic association and narrow
vision that did not work for Woyane
TPLF will work for you. I am sure some
of you guys do not check your email and
failed to read the memo announcing we
have hit the RESET button regarding
that app. Time to move. To tell you the
truth it is sort of disconcerting to see our
people that are residing in the US among
the multitude and still cling to that primal
and primitive notion of ethnicity. If you
ask me it is a sign of an underdeveloped
brain.
The new question in front of us is what
kind of Transitional Government (TG)
do we want to create? What are the
powers of the TG? For how long? What
should be done with the Military? Who
should be included in the TG? What
should the role of foreign powers be in
this situation? What about the fate of the
current people in power? Would they be
allowed to leave?
Ethiopians at home and all over the world
are slowly digesting this calamity brought
on us by a few criminals in positions
of power. How to go about getting rid
of them without doing damage to our
country and people is what is keeping us
awake at night. We have many mature,
reserved and able individuals that are
capable of steering our nation on the
right path. It is our job to calmly look at
our options and with love and good will
there is no question our old country will
join the civilized world and we will put
out effort and energy in building a better
place for our children to grow and thrive.

Dr. Zahir Dandelhai

It took only a few minutes to refute

all their claims. From the hundreds of
videos that was taken by the media and
ordinary people it was clear to hear the
guns blasting and the tear gas canisters
hissing with the smoke cloud engulfing
the poor and confused people.

[By Yilma Bekele]

and especially what not to do at a time

like this. There are still some waving the
ethnic flag but generally It is a pleasure
to see that we have refused to play the
game as officiated by Woyane. The Kilil
mentality will take a long time to erase
but the road we have started is a very
promising highway.

of violent protests.

Oromia region has been holding
demonstrations
since
last
November, and protesters from the
Amhara region have also joined in.
The deaths of at least 55 people
at an Oromo religious festival on
2 October triggered fresh unrest,
including the targeting of some
foreign-owned businesses.
Rights groups say that at least 500
people have died during the protests
overall and last week Prime Minister
Hailemariam Desalegn said that
could be an accurate estimate.
The emergency was announced
earlier this month but the
government has now made clear
what this means in practical terms.
Here are some of the things that are
restricted:
1. Social media
Image caption Activists have used
their mobile phones to spread news
about their protests
You cannot use social media, such
as Facebook and Twitter, to contact
what are called outside forces. In

fact, any attempt to communicate

with terrorist organisations and
anti-peace groups designated as
terrorist is banned.
Protesters have been posting
messages and mobile phone footage
to social media and websites run by
Ethiopian dissidents living abroad.
The government has accused Eritrea
and Egypt of fomenting the protests.
2. Broadcast Media
You cannot watch the TV channels
Esat and OMN, which are both based
outside the country. The government
has described them as belonging to
terrorist organisations.
These broadcasters have become
some of the major sources for
people wanting to know more about
the protests.

You cannot make a political gesture,
such as crossing your arms above
your head, or communicate a
political message to the public
without permission.
The crossing-arms gesture has
been seen widely at the protests in
Oromia, and even made it to the
Olympics when marathon runner
Feyisa Lilesa used it as he crossed
the line in second place in Rio in
August.
5. Curfew

You cannot visit a factory, farm or
governmental institution between
6pm and 6am the next day. If
you violate the curfew than law
enforcement bodies have been
authorized to take the necessary
action.
Government buildings and private
businesses, some of them foreign
owned, have been deliberately
targeted by some of the protesters.
6. Diplomats
If you are a diplomat you are not
allowed to travel more than 40km
(25 miles) from the capital, Addis
Ababa, without permission. The
government says that this is for your
own safety.
In general, the diplomatic reaction
to the protests and the state of
emergency has been muted. The
US has said that it is troubled by
any restrictions on the freedom of
expression in the state of emergency,
but, like other western powers has
called for peaceful dialogue to solve
the countrys problems.
Ethiopia is a close ally of the
US against Islamist militancy in
neighboring Somalia.
7. Guns
If you have a gun, you cannot take
it within 25km of the countrys
main roads out of Addis Ababa,
and within 50km of the countrys
borders, even if you have a permit
to carry it.

Use of social media a crime

in Ethiopia

Monday 17 October 2016, ADDIS ABABA

The Ethiopian government has announced
that opening and posting the current situation in the country on Facebook, listening
to Voice of America and German Radio,
Ethiopian Satellite Television and Radio
(ESAT), Oromo Media Network (OMN),
and accessing social media are crimes in the
country.
The military command will take action on
those watching and posting on these social
media outlets, Siraj Fegessa, Ethiopias
minister of defence said.
ESAT and OMN, based in the US, are the
two major media outlets that diaspora opposition and various protesters get their information from. However, the two are considered dangerous and a tool to incite violence
in the country known for its security and
peaceful co-existence.
As broadcast late on Saturday on state TV,
these regulations would be effective immediately for six months during the state of
emergency Prime Minister Hailemariam
Desalegne declared last week.
The state of emergency was declared to curb
the violent protests in parts of the country
against the marginalisation and unfair political treatment of the Oromia andAmhara,
the two largest ethnic groups in the country.
The protests started last November and over
700 people have been killed by Ethiopian
security forces, according to Human Rights
Watch.
The announcement included restricting the
movement of diplomats to 40km out of Addis Ababa without official permission.
The state of emergency also prohibits anyone making contact with groups designated
as terrorists and meeting foreigners to discuss issues that could incite violence. According to the statement by Fegessa, those
who break the terms of the emergency risk
a jail term of three to five years.
Rallies and public meetings without the
permission from authorities is forbidden
and gives the security forces the right to

detain and search suspects and their houses
or offices, phones or laptops without a court
order, the minister said.

Ethiopia: From Role Model to Cautionary Tale. [By The Globalist,]

Moreover, a red zone has been declared

within 50km of the borders. Legal or not,
during the six months no one can carry a
firearm or any flammable material in the red
zone. The red zone also includes the countrys major roads that connect to neighbouring countries.
The sides of the roads for 25km on either side
are also classified as red zones. These roads
include the Addis-Djibouti, Addis-Shashamane-Moyale, Addis-Shashamane-Dolo,
Addis-Assosa, AddisHarar, AddisGambela, Addis-Gebreguracha, Gondar-Metema, and Gondar-Humera roads.
A dusk to dawn curfew was also imposed
on major projects, factories, farms, and
government institutions. The announcement
said that no one can enter these after 6pm
and before 6am. If anyone violates these
rules, security forces are ordered to take the
necessary measures.
All political parties are also banned from
giving press statements inciting violence,
and no one, including religious leaders, can
make political statements at religious gatherings, national, and sporting activities. Educational institutions are also included. The
directive bans demonstrations in educational institutions.
Members of the security forces are also
banned from asking for leave and cannot
resign from their position. Refugees cannot
leave their camps without proper authorisation.
Meanwhile, there has been no internet connection in Addis Ababa for the past week.
The state of emergency provides for communications to be cut and it is not known
how long this cut will last. The European
Union and the US have advised the Ethiopian government to treat protesters and all
Ethiopians well during this period.
