Brick Construction
Kealy Stapleton
Second Empire style became popular in the United States roughly around 1855-1885
primarily in the Northeast and the Midwest. Structures of this style included decorative
details such as iron cresting on the roof, towered houses, symmetrical windows and heavily
ornamented wood trim with hoods at windows and doors. These structures were often
made out of brick and almost always have slate shingles. (Second Empire Style)

A3.1
I developed my concept for this project by trying to gather as much information from the
client profile and put myself in the clients shoes. I made my best attempt to design spaces that
would fit her needs and style. The client stated that she liked art nouveau style so I selected
muted tones of yellow, blues and greens and a variety of neutrals. I researched various Art
Nouveau styles to get better insight for making selections. She also is a nurse so I wanted to
create a soothing environment where she could enjoy her time off of work with her son. I tried to
customize the space by adding in areas for all of her hobbies such as a designated scrapbooking
area and a built in that could display all of her medals from running.
Working throughout this course on schematic plans and gaining feedback from the
professor and also my fellow peers really helped shape the final selections, layouts and schemes
for this project. I had to take human functions and spatial relationships when creating the initial
floor plan and the furniture plan after that. I designed the sizes of each space and the closeness of
each room to each other by using the adjacency matrix exercise.
This course has really helped me get a perspective on what it is like to completely design
a project from start to finish. It allowed me to practice not only selecting furniture and fabrics but
also work on floor plans and layouts, finish material selections, data entering into specification
sheets and working in AutoCAD. I feel that the final result of this course has prepared me a great
deal for an entry level position and it will allow me to have something to show for all of the hard
work put in throughout the course through my final portfolio.
Sketching is definitely a concept that will help me market myself for an entry level
position. I think the practice we had in this course relative to the weekly assignments will allow
me to show a potential employer that I have experience. Additionally, the knowledge and study
of some basic codes is also an impressive marketing point and finally the ability to cohesively
scheme together all finish materials, furniture, fabric, light fixtures, etc. and have something to
show for it is another great tool to show potential employers.
