Characteristics of Patients with Rhinitis in An Outpatient of the PHC Batua
Makassar Period January - May 2015

ABSTRACT
Background: Health problems in the medical world increases with various
diseases, especially disorders of the nose. Rhinitis is irritation and inflammation
of the inside of the nose. Almost everyone has suffered from rhinitis in his life.
Most people get attacked by one to six times per year. In the United States, rhinitis
affects more than 50 million people. Various factors can influence the occurrence
of rhinitis on a person. This study aims to determine the characteristics of patients
with rhinitis.
Methods: This study used a survey method with descriptive approach that aims to
identify the characteristics of patients with rhinitis in Batua Health Center,
Makassar based on sociodemographic, clinical symptoms, rhinitis type, type of
treatment, as well as the number of visits. Samples of 40 people were selected
with a total sampling technique.
Results: The results in PHC Batua Makassar during the period from January to
May 2015 show that the highest proportion of patients with rhinitis by age were in
the age range of 20-29 years with a number of 13 cases (32%), according to the
female gender by the number 25 cases (62.5%), and by occupation as housewife
with a number of 20 cases (50%). All rhinitis patients who visit have symptoms of
nasal congestion (obstruction of nose) and runny nose (rhinorrhea). It is also
found that allergic rhinitis is the type of most cases, as many as 28 cases (70%). In
terms of treatment, antihistamines are most commonly used, 26 cases (65%). All
rhinitis patients (95%) only visit once to the clinic for treatment.
Conclusion: Rhinitis affects more in the range of 20-29 years of age, especially
women who work as a housewife. Each rhinitis patient can experience symptoms
of nasal congestion and a runny nose. As for most commonly of rhinitis is allergic
rhinitis in which case two times more than non-allergic rhinitis so antihistamines
are more widely used. However, almost all patients visited only once to the clinic
for treatment.
