INT - ADAM'S BEDROOM - MORNING

A 14-YEAR-OLD BOY CALLED ADAM LAYS IN BED WITH HIS EYES CLOSED.
Adam is quite pale, with scruffy hair and has a continual look of bewilderment o
n his face.
ADAM'S BEDROOM IS UNFATHOMABLY TIDY, WITH BOOKS ALIGNED AND ORNAMENTS, PERFECTLY
PLACED. HIS ALARM GOES OFF AND HE OPENS HIS EYES AND HOPS OUT OF BED. ADAM GETS
READY FOR SCHOOL, BUCKLING HIS BELT, PUTTING ON HIS BLAZER, ADJUSTING HIS TIE A
ND TYING HIS SHOES. THE UNIFORM IS JET BLACK AND THE TIE BLACK AND RED, HE ATTEN
DS LOCAL SCHOOL KINGSLEY ACADEMY AND DREADS GOING TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY. WE CAN TE
LL THIS BY THE LOOK OF DISAPPOINTMENT ON HIS FACE AS HE PREPARES FOR THE DAY. BE
FORE HEADING DOWN TO SEE IF THERE IS ANYTHING TO EAT, ADAM GETS HIS SAFE ITEM WH
ICH IS AN AMMONITE, A CIRCULAR FOSSIL.
OPENING TITLE: ADAM
INT - THE KITCHEN - MORNING
THERE IS USUALLY NO FOOD IN THE CUPBOARDS FOR BREAKFAST AS ADAM COMES FROM A REL
ATIVELY IMPOVERISHED FAMILY, HE SCOURS AROUND THE CUPBOARDS BUT FAILS TO FIND AN
YTHING. HE LEAVES THE KITCHEN AND APPROACHES THE DOOR HESITANTLY AS HE KNOWS AS
SOON AS OPENS THAT DOOR AND LEAVES HE IS OUT OF HIS COMFORT ZONE AND HAS TO EMBR
ACE THE REST OF THE WORLD. THIS IS A BIG TASK FOR ADAM AS IT IS THE MOMENT IN WH
ICH HE LEAVES HIS LITTLE WORLD AND MUST FACE ALL OF HIS FEARS AT ONCE. THIS IS W
HY HE WILL OPEN THE DOOR SO FEARFULLY.
EXT - STREET - MORNING
ADAM IS NOW WALKING DOWN A SUBURBAN STREET WITH CARS PARKED EITHER SIDE OF THE R
OAD, HIS DAILY WALK IS ONE THAT HE HATES. HE JUST WISHES HE COULD SIT INSIDE ALL
DAY AND AVOID EVERYTHING THAT STRESSES HIM. HE HAS TO WALK PAST THE CAF IN THE TO
WN CENTRE WHICH HE WISHES HE COULD AVOID. DESPITE HIS EXTREME HUNGER, HE LACKS T
HE CONFIDENCE TO GO INSIDE. IT IS A TYPICAL DINNER OF SORTS, WITH RED CHAIRS AND
A COUNTER, OVENS AND GRILLS BEHIND THE COUNTER AND A COFFEE MAKER. SMELLING THE
COFFEE BREWING AND THE SMELL OF BACON AND SAUSAGES COMING FROM THE ESTABLISHMEN
T BECAUSE OF THE OPEN DOOR HE HAS TO RESIST HIS HUNGER AS HE WOULDN'T DARE GO IN
AS HE IS SCARED OF TALKING TO PEOPLE HE DOESN'T KNOW AND DOESN'T LIKE TO EAT IN
PUBLIC (SYMPTOMS OF SOCIAL ANXIETY). ADAM HAS AN INTERNAL VOICE IN HIS HEAD THA
T TELLS HIM NOT TO GO IN FOR THESE VERY REASONS AND IT CONTRIBUTES TO HIS ANXIET
Y. AFTER A QUICK GLANCE, HE CONFORMS TO THE VOICES AND WALKS STRAIGHT ON PAST WI
TH A GREAT LOOK OF ANXIETY ON HIS FACE.
INT - ADAM'S BEDROOM - MORNING
IT'S A NEW MORNING AND WE BRIEFLY SEE ADAM GETTING UP AND PREPARING HIMSELF FOR
THE DAY. HE PUTS ON HIS SCHOOL UNIFORM WITH HASTE AND PREPARES TO FORCE HIMSELF
OUT THE HOUSE AND DOWN THE SMALL BUT PERFECTLY TIDY STAIRCASE. ADAM SHUTS T
he door behind him, which he struggles to open in the first place as his hands s
hake so much in the first place due to the nerves. He dreads heading out to scho
ol once again.
EXT. - STREET - MORNING
WALKING DOWN THE STREET, ADAM WALKS PAST A FEW PEOPLE WHO HE CANNOT MAKE EYE CON
TACT WITH AS HE LOOKS THE OTHER WAY TO AVOID EYE CONTACT WITH THEM, AS HE DOES T
HIS WE HEAR HIS VOICE WORRY ABOUT WHETHER THE PEOPLE ARE FOLLOWING HIM. HE APPRO
ACHES THE CAF ONCE AGAIN, SLOUCHED OVER WALKING, FEELING RATHER TIRED AND LOOKING
VERY BEWILDERED. THIS TIME, THE VOICE TELLS HIM TO NOT GO IN BUT CONSIDERS IT A
BIT, THE VOICE SITS ON THE FENCE. YET AGAIN ADAM GLANCES AT THE CAF WITH GREAT HUN
GER AFTER AGAIN, NOT HAVING BREAKFAST. HE WALKS PAST BUT FAILS TO ENTER AGAIN. H
E THEN CONTINUES TO WALK PAST BUT BRIEFLY STOPS AS HE FEARS THAT A LEAF IS ALSO

FOLLOWING HIM. WE SEE THE PANIC ON HIS FACE WHEN HE SEES THE LEAF SCURRYING IN T
HE WIND BEHIND HIM. THIS FACT IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE VOICE STRESSING HIS HUNGER A
ND TELLING HIMSELF THAT HE WILL GO IN TOMORROW, AGAIN WE SEE A LOOK OF CONFUSION
ON HIS FACE.
INT - ADAM'S BEDROOM MORNING
ADAM WAKES UP TO HIS ALARM, GETS PREPPED FOR THE DAY IN A SLUGGISH MANNER THIS T
IME AS HE IS TIRED AND IS NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO FACING ANOTHER DAY. HIS MORNING
PREP IS THE SAME AS THE LAST TWO DAYS BY PUTTING ON HIS SCHOOL UNIFORM IN AN O.
C.D LIKE WAY AND WALKING AROUND IN A ROOM WITH ZERO CLUTTER. HE WALKS DOWN THE S
TILL PERFECTLY CLEAN STAIRS AND TENTATIVELY LEAVES THE HOUSE TO BEGIN HIS WALK T
O SCHOOL. JUST AFTER LEAVING, ADAM CHECKS HIS POCKET TO SEE IF HIS FOSSIL IS THE
RE, WHICH IT IS THANKFULLY.
EXT - STREET - MORNING
ADAM WALKS DOWN THE STREET WHICH SEEMS EMPTY TODAY, HE STARES AROUND TO SEE WHAT
IS GOING ON AND IF ANYONE IS WATCHING HIM. WE AGAIN SEE CONFUSION AND BEWILDERM
ENT ON HIS FACE AS HE PLODS DOWN THE SUBURBAN STREET. YET AGAIN, HE APPROACHES T
HE CAF AS THE ANXIETY BEGINS TO KICK IN. THIS TIME, THINGS FEEL DIFFERENT FOR ADAM
.
INT - CAF - MORNING
ADAM PLUCKS UP THE COURAGE TO ENTER AS HIS INTERNAL VOICE ENCOURAGES HIM TO ENTE
R THE CAF DUE TO HIS EXTREME HUNGER. HE STOPS OUTSIDE AND WAITS FOR A MOMENT, TO T
AKE A DEEP BREATH AND PREPARES TO LEAP THIS MASSIVE HURDLE. PUSHING OPEN THE DOO
R, HE WALKS OVER TO THE COUNTER AND WAITS. NOT MANY PEOPLE ARE IN THE CAF, IT IS E
ARLY IN THE MORNING AND THE PLACE IS FAIRLY DESERTED. THE SOUND OF AN OLD RADIO
PLAYS, SOME CLASSICAL PIANO MUSIC PLAYS AND IT SOUNDS RELAXING. ADAM'S HANDS STA
RT TO TWITCH IN ANTICIPATION OF HAVING TO SPEAK TO THE WAITRESS. HE LOOKS AROUND
THE EMPTY CAFE THINKING THAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING HIM AGAIN, HE ADJUSTS HIS TIE
UNNECESSARILY AND CHECKS FOR THE FOSSIL. THE WAITRESS TURNS AROUND AND GOES TO S
PEAK TO ADAM.
Dialogue
Waitress - What can I get you?
Adam - Says nothing, voices in his head still there
Waitress - Sir?
Adam - Ummmm.... Ahhhhh.... (voice in his head begins to stress more and mor
e)
Waitress - Sir?
Adam - Bacon Sandwich pppppp p p p pplleease
Waitress - Sure. That will be 2.
THE WAITRESS TURNS AROUND TO PREPARE THE FOOD WHILE ADAM'S ANXIETY STARTS TO BOI
L OVER. HIS HANDS TWITCH AND HE TAPS HIS FOOT, THIS FIDGETING WOULD BE AN EXAMPL
E OF THE ANXIETY HE STRUGGLES WITH. THE SOUNDS OF THE COFFEE MAKER, THE OVEN AND
OTHER AMBIENT SOUNDS WILL GET LOUDER AND LOUDER AS HIS ANXIETY INCREASES. HIS I
NTERNAL VOICE CONTINUES TO GET LOUDER IN HIS HEAD AND A SWEAT FORMS ON HIS BROW.
ADAM PANICS AND RUNS AWAY FROM THE CAF TO HIS HOME AS FAST AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE. A
DAM HAS A LOOK OF GREAT CONFUSION, BEWILDERMENT, AND FRIGHT ON HIS FACE AS HE RU
SHES HOME.
INT - ADAM'S BEDROOM - MORNING
HIS MOTHER IS IN HER 40S AND HAS ALWAYS TRIED TO DO HER BEST FOR
ADAM, THIS HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE AS SHE IS A SINGLE PARENT. SHE HAS BLONDE HAIR A
ND A WARM, CARING PERSONALITY.

ADAM SITS ON HIS BED BEING COMFORTED BY HIS MOTHER WHO HAS HER ARM AROUND HIS SH
OULDER. THIS SCENE WILL BE SILENT, WITHOUT HIS INTERNAL VOICE AS WE FOCUS ON THE
EMBRACE BETWEEN THE MOTHER AND SON.
Adam rests his head on his Mother's shoulder with tears running down his cheeks,
he is upset as he has been trying to hide this anxiety from his mother for a wh
ile now. He feels disappointed that he couldn't hide his feeling and feels embar
rassed that he struggles with these feelings. He is not sure if he has social an
xiety or not but his Mother suggests that they should see the school councillor
to get professional help.
INT - SCHOOL WAITING ROOM - THE NEXT DAY- AFTERNOON
HIS MOTHER BOOKED HIM AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE SCHOOL COUNCILLOR WHO DEALS WITH I
SSUES SUCH AS SOCIAL ANXIETY AT KINGSLEY ACADEMY.A MODERN WAITING ROOM WITH WOOD
EN CHAIRS AND TABLES, A FEW MAGAZINES SCATTERED AROUND ALSO. PEOPLE WALK PAST IN
THE BACKGROUND. ADAM SITS WITH HIS MOTHER AWAITING HIS NAME TO BE CALLED BY THE
COUNCILLOR, HE KEEPS HIS HEAD DOWN TO AVOID EYE CONTACT. ADAM IS CALLED BY THE
COUNCILLOR AND HEADS TOWARDS THE MEETING ROOM. THE LAST THING WE SEE IS ADAM AND
HIS MOTHER CHATTING WITH THE COUNCILLOR IN A VERY PLAIN MEETING ROOM.
THE COUNCILLOR IS A CALM DEMENOURED MAN, HE TOO IS IN HIS 40S, W
EARS GLASSES AND IS BALD. HE WANTS THE BEST FOR THE STUDENTS OF KINGSLEY AND IS
WILLING TO HELP ANYONE NO MATTER THE PROBLEM.
