What is the relationship between craters, calderas,

vents, and magma? The crater is connected to the
magma chamber by the vent. Calderas can form
when the summit or the side of a volcano collapses
into the magma chamber. Lava erupts through an
opening in the crust called a vent.
How does a crater lake form? (words and pictures)
What two factors does a volcanos appearance
depend upon?
1. Type of material that form the volcano
2. Type of eruptions that occur

How do the volcanoes compare in terms of size and

slope?
Size-smallest to largest
Slope-steepest, gentle slope,
What factors cause differences in size and slope?
Material that make up the volcano
Vegetation that grows on the volcanos slope
Local climate
Eruptive history of the volcano
What is tephra?
Rock fragments thrown into the air during a volcanic
eruption
What is a pyroclastic flow?
Rapidly moving volcanic material
Where are most volcanoes found?
Plate boundaries
Use the maps provided to show: (1) the Circum Pacific
Belt and the Mediterranean Belt where convergent
volcanism occurs and (2) the Hawaiian Emperor
Volcanic Chain.
How do hotspots form?
Where high-temperature plumes of mantle
material rise toward the surface

What do hotspots tell us about tectonic plates?

The rate and motion can be calculated from
positions of these volcanos. Even changes in plate
motion that occurred in the distant past can be
determined.
