tobeLemnaminor:Ithasthreeveinsarisingfrompointofroot
attachment(node),withoutdorsalrowofpapulesandreddish
anthocyaninonventralside(asinL.turionifera)andwithoutwinged
rootsheath(asinL.aequinoctialis).Lemnagibbacanberuledout
becausetheplantbodyisnongibbousandwithoutevidenceof
anthocyanin.TheuninervedLemnaminutaandL.valdivianacanbe
ruledoutbecausethereareclearlythreeveins.
ItispossiblethatthepopulationalsocontainsL.turionifera.Thelatter
speciesiscommonthroughouttheinlandmountainsandvalleysofSan
DiegoCounty.Someofthesmaller,youngerplantshadafaintrowof
dorsalpapulessimilartoL.turionifera.Turionsaretypicallyproduced
duringthefallmonths,andreddishanthocyaninisbestobservedduring
thepeakgrowingseasonofsummer.Thesetwospeciesareverysimilar.
