HeisalsorememberedforhisstellarroleintheIndependencemovementandhis
espousalofHindunationalism.
HeisconsideredasoneoftheinitialleadersoftherightwingHinduMahasabha
anddiedin1946.

HeisamongstthefoundermembersoferstwhileBharatiyaJanaSanghwhich
laterbecameknownasBharatiyaJanataParty(BJP).
Hewasparliamentarianforover4decadesandwaselectedtotheLokSabhafor
9times,and2totheRajyaSabha.
HewasalsotheMinisterofExternalAffairsinthecabinetofJantaGovernment
headedbyMorarjiDesaii.e.from197779.
In2009,heretiredfromactivepoliticsduetohealthconcerns.
Recently,UniongovernmenthadannouncedtoobservehisbirthdayasGood
GovernanceDay.

advancementofart,literatureandscience,andpublicservice.
InDecember2011,governmenthadchangedthecriteriaforincluding
sportspersonforthisawardthusaddedcategoryforperformanceofhighestorderin
anyfieldofhumanendeavour.
Itwasinstitutedintheyear1954.

thePresident.Noformalrecommendationsforthisarenecessary.
TherecipientreceivesaSanad(certificate)signedbythePresidentanda
medallion.Itdoesnotcarryanymonetarygrant.

(IncludingMadanMohanMalviyaandA.B.Vajpayee).
InFebruary2014,itwasawardedtoeminentscientistProfC.N.R.Raoand
