Roadaccidentscontinuetobetheleadingcauseofdeathofmenin
India,accordingtothe2014NationalCrimeRecordsBureau
publishedonFriday.Over1.2lakhmalelivesin2014werelostin
roadaccidentsnearlyfivetimesthenumberofmaledeathsby
homicidethepreviousyear.Thelargestnumberofmaledeathsin
roadaccidentsoccursintheagegroupof18to30.
Forwomen,roadaccidentsaccountforthesecondlargestnumber
ofdeathsbyunnaturalcauses.
Suicideisthetopnondiseasekillerofwomen,takingover42,000
femaleliveslastyear,althoughtherehasbeenaslightdeclineinthe

numberofsuicidesamongbothmenandwomen.Illnessand
miscellaneousfamilyproblemsarethestatedcausesforthelargest
numberoffemalesuicides,astheyareformen.
In2014,68womenwerereportedtohavecommittedsuicideon
accountofphysicalabuseorrapeand2,222asaresultofdowry
harassment.
Overhalfofthewomenwhocommittedsuicidelastyearwere
housewives.Nearly1,500werefarmersoragriculturallabourers.
ThreequarterswereamongthepoorestclassofIndians.
Whilewomenaremostlikelytocommitsuicidebetweentheagesof
18and30,menaremostlikelytotaketheirlivesbetweentheageof
30and45.
Ingeneral,menoutnumberwomeninallcategoriesofunnatural
deaths,exceptinthecaseoffire.Thiscanbeattributedtoagender
dynamicthatisstillskewedtowardsmenspendingmoretime
outsidethehouseandatwork,whilewomenspendmostoftheir
timeathome,saydemographers.Amongnaturalcalamities,
lightningwasthetopkillerofbothmenandwomen,takingover
2,500liveslastyearalone.
