What type of assessments do you (or would you) most likely develop? Written tests?

Essay tests? Selected-response tests? Short-answer tests? Performance tests?


I like to use a variety of assessment types to gauge student understanding of a topic. Currently,
my school uses common assessments that are a combination of selected-response and short
answer questions. While this what I have to use in my classroom, I like assessment questions
that allow students to explain their thinking like a selected or performance test. This allows
students to showcase their learning in multiple ways and can also include critical thinking tasks
as well.
Give an example of a topic with one or two learning objectives for students.
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative,
connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning
and tone.

I can associate the impact of word choice on its overall meaning and tone.
I can determine the use of figurative, connotative and technical meaning in a text.
Next describe what assessment could be used to measure students' learning.
One assessment that could be done to assess this standard is to have students read a speech
or informational text. Students would then have to analyze and determine the impact that the
word choice and figurative language had on the central idea of the informational text. Likewise,
you could also assess this standard with a fiction piece as well.
What would the students actually do on the assessment to demonstrate their learning?
Students would actually annotate the speech to show that they understood the mood, tone,
word choice, and figurative language. Students would then have to write their analysis of the
piece as well.
What are some possibilities for using technology in the assessment process?
You could have students integrate research into this assessment and perform research utilizing
technology. Students could also complete the assignment in Google Classroom for ease of
grading.
