Hundreds of students in the university held a walkout protest on September
21 to call for human rights and the right to education. They lamented the privatization and commercialization of education through the implementation of the Socialized Tuition System (STS) and the imposition of other school fees. This is the reason many of the youth cannot get an education, Anakbayan, a mass organization participating in the protest, said in their official statement. The students also called for the protection of human rights as the protest coincided with the commemoration of the 44th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law. On September 21, 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law allegedly to curb rising Communist threats. This was accompanied by human rights violations, including incidents of torture, censorship of media, and the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, without which anyone can be arrested without a warrant. Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP (STAND UP) Chairperson Josiah Hiponia pointed out how Filipinos today are still living under a semblance of Martial Law. Citing rampant extrajudicial and summary killings as one of the similarities between the Martial Law era and the Philippines today, Hiponia stressed the importance of a sustained fight for human rights. The protest culminated in a march towards Mendiola, where they were joined by other schools such as UP Manila, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of Sto. Tomas, National Teachers College, Batasan National High School, and Araullo High School.
