Spinning vs.

Shear Forming
Spinning and shear forming are two forms of metal working used when a circular
component is involved and generally prove to be a cheaper alternative to deep drawing.
Spinning involves applying a forming tool to a revolving blank in a series of sweeping strokes
until the blank is pressed into the shape of the former block. The blank is a piece of circular
sheet metal and it is clamped to an either wooden or metal former and then placed into the
machine.
>> The thickness of the initial blank remains the same throughout the process as it
is altered into the finished component.

Shear forming uses a much thicker metal blank initially and the finished result has a wall
thickness that is much less than that of the initial blank. As such, the difference between
shear forming and the previously described spinning method is that shear forming requires
much greater forming forces due to the need to reduce the thickness of the metal
components wall.
