In the short poem, John Henry, the main character. John Henry, is a determined
character. For example, he puts lots of work into everything he does and is very serious about
what he does. John Henry says,Before Id let that steam drill beat me down, Id Hammer my
fool self to death. (296) This shows he is determined because he would rather die than lose to
a steam drill, and that would take a lot of hard work and determination. Another example is
when John henry explains to his captain that he really overdid it, and is hurt. John Henry also
shows determination during the race against the steam drill. He says, Captain, Ive hammered
my insides in two (297) This shows that he is determined because he is hurt, and that he
tried his hardest and gave it his all, and in the end it didnt end up well for him, but he never
gave up. In conclusion, John Henry is determined, and hardworking, because he doesnt give
up, and is always trying to do better.
