The TLF identifies five areas within


lessons in which language may impede
access to instruction. These areas are called
leverage points to illustrate that, if area is
focused on, it can alter the learning
opportunities within the lesson.

The purpose of this assignment is to reflect upon the lesson from the perspective of
a linguistically responsive teacher and discuss what you learned. The domains and
guiding questions below will help you to write your reflection. Please, dont write
more than 1 page single space and upload your document to learn@uw no later than
2 days after you teach your lesson
I. Setting Up Learning: Initiating activity so that learners clearly know what to do,
how and why. Guiding questions: What did I do? Why did I do this? What is the
effect on my students learning? How do I know? What should I change?
II. Grouping Learners: Choosing, monitoring, and modifying (as needed) the ways
in which learners work with each other and the teacher to accomplish the goals
of the lesson and meet learner needs. Guiding questions: What did I do? Why did I
do this? What is the effect on my students learning? How do I know? What should I
change?
III. Engaging Learners in Learning: Actively involving all learners in tasks that
require them to grapple with the content in meaningful ways during the lesson.
Guiding questions: What did I do? Why did I do this? What is the effect on my
students learning? How do I know? What should I change?
IV. Scaffolding Learning: Knowing what your learners already know about the
topic of the lesson, what they will need to know and do in order to display that
they have learned the lesson, and supporting them to get there. Guiding
questions: What did I do? Why did I do this? What is the effect on my students
learning? How do I know? What should I change?
V. Checking Learners Understanding: Monitoring learners understanding of
what they are doing and learning and responding appropriately. Guiding
questions: What did I do? Why did I do this? What is the effect on my students
learning? How do I know? What should I change?
