1) students address real-world public

problems (for example, clarifying a
contemporary issue by applying statistical
analysis in a report to the city council on
the homeless); or (2) students use personal
experiences as a context for applying
knowledge (such as using conflict
resolution techniques in their own school).

Often the work students do does not

allow them to use their minds well.

The work has no intrinsic meaning or

value to students beyond achieving
success in school.

I Say
My notes, commentary
This is the continuing question in education,
no matter what the subject, is what we are
teaching them making them learning
anything. They put this point in two consist
points within the article.

This is another question of if we are teaching

something. Is what we are teaching
connected to their lives or what is important
to them? Does it have real world applications
or are we just spewing and making them
memorize facts?

In the dept
of knowledge ...students' depth of knowledge and
section
understanding. This term refers to the

substantive character of the ideas in a

lesson and to the level of understanding
that students demonstrate as they consider
these ideas.

Can students apply the knowledge that

they have so far learned? Again this asks
if the students are merely learning and
spewing definitions and facts or if they
actually can do some deeper thinking and
connecting with what they have learned.

Connection: the question that I have been asking throughout all my blog post has added another depth
when considering this article. They are saying that standards are necessary to make sure knowledge
and deeper understanding is obtained. They pose the same questions as I have in BP 1-4, if teachers
connect this to students lives then do they like social studies more, because according to why students
hate social studies, they do not like it very much now.
