Summer Novel

Assignments 2016
Questions:
1. The group of boys are on their way home once their plane crashes close to a
deserted island. there's no adult direction thus the boys are left to survive on
their own. The story takes place throughout war II, and they are leaving due
to the threat of nuclear war.
2. Literary Devises in Lord Of lies are:
Irony: The Boys who survived the plane crash are form a battle zone,
it's ironic that the group they form eventually breaks down and the
boys are in the 'war' with each other.
Allusion: The three boys Ralph, Jack and Peterkin should fight the
pirates in order to survive, Simon is seen by several as spiritual figure.
Simile: "The coral was scribbled in the sea as though a giant had bent
down to reproduce the shape of the island in a flowing chalk line but
tired before he had finished (pg 29)." Another instance: "The breezes
that on the lagoon had chased their tails like kittens were finding their
way across the platform and into the forest (pg 34)." At one point,
Golding writes, "The two boys, bullet-headed and with hair like tow,
flung themselves down and lay grinning and panting at Ralph like dogs
(not sure of the page number)."
Symbol: The Beast-The unreal beast that frightens all the boys stands
for the primal instinct of savagery that exists among all persons. The
boys are frightened of the beast, however only Simon reaches the
conclusion that they concern the beast because it exists among each
of them. By the end of the novel, the boys are leaving it sacrifices and
treating it as a belief god. The boys behavior is what brings the beast
into existence, that the more ferociously the boys act, the more real
the beast appears to become.
Slang: Wacco and Wizzo-This phrase is used to express excitement.
Other words for this are Wahoo!
Repetition: he would like to have a pair of scissors and cut this hair-he
flung the mass back-cut this filthy hair right back to half a inch. He
would like to have a bath, a proper wallow with soap.
Personification: "creepers dropped their ropes like the rigging of
foundered ships".
Alliteration: Ralph is doing his best to lessen the younger boys' fears
and establish rules to bring order, however Jack has different plans.

Jack desires to be responsible and seizes the chance once one of the
young ones claims to have seen a beast. although he is aware of that
the beast does not exist, Jack claims that he and his hunters can kill it.
'He gave a wild whoop and leapt all the way down to the pale sand.'
the other boys feel that Jack's savagery can save them, therefore most
follow Jack. The 'wild whoop' alliteration indicates an abrupt transition
as many of the boys have begun to change loyalties
4. In Chapter two the reader will simply develop that there's a good quantity of
disaster on the second day. Ralph calls the boys for a gathering and lays
down rules, the boys are excited because not only are there rules however
once the principles are broken someone should be punished . occurring into
the meeting Piggy discuss a young boys worry of this unseen beast, nobody
believes him but they agree to look for it anyways. when starting a fire and
rudely burning Piggy's glasses he mentions the young boy is missing. This
causes fear.
5. Simon is the most self-examining character within the novel, Simon has a
deep affinity with nature and sometimes walks alone in the jungle. whereas
Piggy represents the cultural and Ralph the political and ethical aspects of
civilization, Simon represents the religious aspect of attribute. Like Piggy,
Simon is an outcast: the other boys think of him as odd and maybe insane.
it's Simon who finds the beast. when he tries to inform the group that it's only
a dead pilot, the boys, underneath the impression that he's the beast, murder
him in a panic. Golding often suggests that Simon could be a spiritual-figure
whose death could be a reasonably martyrdom. His name, which implies "he
whom God has heard," indicates the depth of his spirituality and position to
the novel's religious belief allegory.
6. Color is used symbolically throughout the text. it's used to illustrate the
means the boys change throughout the novel. for instance, we are introduced
to Jack's hunters, who wear black robes, which is claimed to indicate their
roles (hunters, murderers). Jack also has red hair..... the color of blood. The
single piece of shell is white..... a symbol of civilization.... peace and harmony.
because the novel progresses the colors begin to mingle. They show up in
war paint and serve to terrorize, whereas, they once represented good things
like food and shelter.
7. Jack overcomes Ralph's control through the use of fear. The boys are
extremely paranoid about the beast, especially after Sam see's the
parachutist on the mountain and mistake it for a horrible creature. Jack uses
his prowess as a hunter to bring the other boys over to his side; he convinces
them that as a hunter, he will be able to stalk and kill the beast. Since Ralph
has little to no skill at hunting, Jack draws attention to himself as being both a
better protector and provider than Ralph. In chapter eight, Jack leaves the

tribe in a sulky fit but quickly rallies the older boys who enjoy hunting to his
side; Jack seizes power through fear and manipulation.
8. Evil is present in the fear of the survivors.
10.The novel alludes to the cold war conflict between liberal democracy and
totalitarian communism. Ralph represents the liberal tradition, while Jack,
before he succumbs to total disorder, represents the type of military
monocracy that, for mid-century America and Great Britain, characterized the
communist system. it's also notable that Sir William Gerald Golding sets the
novel in what seems to be a future human reality, one that is in crisis after
atomic war. Golding's novel capitalizes on public psychosis surrounding the
atom bomb which, as a result of the arms race of the cold war, was at a high.
Golding's negative depiction of Jack, who represents an anti-democratic
political system, and his suggestion of the fact of atomic war, present the
novel as a gesture of support for the Western position in the cold war.

Speech
What is Bullying?
use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or
her to do what one wants.
What is vengeance?
punishment inflicted or retribution exacted for an injury or wrong.
What is gang behavior?
Group of people working together to do something bad.
The main bully in the novel is Jack. Jack began as a civilized young man who was
the leader of a boys choir group, but as the novel progressed, Jack became savage.

Types of bullying in the story:

Physical Bullying: Jack mostly physically bullies Piggy. Jack breaks Piggy's glasses,
and he also steals Piggy's glasses.
Verbal Bullying: Jack verbally bullies many of the boys on the island. Jack verbally
abuses Piggy, Simon and many more boys.
Emotional Bullying: Emotional bullying continues along with verbal bullying. The
way someone affects you verbally will commonly affect you emotionally. In Lord of
the Flies, Piggy got upset when Ralph made fun of his at-school nickname, and
when Jack singled him out from activities.
Social Bullying: Social bullying is used within the novel to make Ralph and Piggy feel
like an outcast because they were not a part of Jack's tribe.
Jack is very strong with his words and does not care if he hurts someone's feelings.
When the boys first met each other on the island, Jack immediately called Piggy a
fatty. Jack had never seen Piggy nor talked to him and yet he willingly called Piggy a
fatty. Bullying was a significant factor on the Island. Bullying affected the boys
immensely and it caused death upon Simon and Piggy. If bullying was not present
then some lives could of been saved.

Vengeance
Simons internal conflict and also the demand introduced by the Beast involves a
climax once he's given with the notion that siding with the Lord of the Flies may well
be the only way to save himself. The Lord of the Flies ends their conversation,
vowing he can have fun within the future with Simon on the island, foreshadowing
terrible things yet to come. Simon blacks go into the depths of the jungle
attributable to what the Lord of the Flies has told him. This voice communication
causes Simons new escalated concern. At the instant he faints, his vision conjointly
engulfs him in darkness: the Beasts mouth. This signifies his new reference to the
Beast.
Gang Behavior:
There is no set definition on what a gang is, but gangs are usually classified by:
* 3 or more members usually aged 12-24

* Members share an identity typically linked to a name or symbol

* Members share a degree of organization
* Group is involved with a higher level of crime
There are different levels of superiority within a gang, the leader being the highest.
The leader(s) determine the level of criminal activity the gang will perform. The
formation of a gang begins with a person who obtains a group of friends and starts
claiming "territory". This group often intimidates, persuades, and merges with other
kids/gangs to grow their own. Gangs are often a form of support for these kids.
Physical protection To avoid harassment Identity, recognition, belonging, discipline,
love, money Kids do not get adequate family attention 75% of gang members have
no father; no role model. Respected only when feared; achieved through physical
harm to others. Sam and Eric joined Jack's tribe/gang because of threats and
intimidation. They knew they had to join to protect themselves. Sam and Eric would
be considered fringe members of Jack's gang. Fringe members are people who are
not completely devoted to the gang and would be able to function without the gang.
The victims of gang violence are often times prone to threats of revenge, which will
sometimes lead to strong feelings of intimidation and fear. The effects of gang
violence can be short and long term, both mentally and physically. Piggy was a
victim of the violence of Jack's tribe, as they taunted him and stole his glasses. He
did not try to get revenge on them, because he knew that that was not the smartest
thing to do. However, he did fear the tribe would hurt him and steal his glasses.
