Homework 6
Due Date: Oct 28th 2016
1. A semi-infinite body of liquid with constant density and viscosity is bounded below by a
horizontal surface (the xz plane). Initially the fluid and the solid are at rest. At time t = 0,
the solid surface is set in motion in the positive x direction by applying a constant force
(shear stress). (25 Points)
[Note: This situation is different than Example 4.1-1 where the bottom plate starts
moving with a constant velocity vo rather than a constant force at t = 0. Problem 4B.1 in
BSL]
a. Differentiate the equation of motion along x with respect to y to get the equation
of motion in terms of shear stress.
b. Identify the initial and boundary conditions for the shear stress.
c. Solve for the shear stress profile as a function of time.
d. Solve for the velocity profile in terms of time.
e. Calculate velocity at y = 0 [vx (0, t)] in this case.
z

2. Solve the integral for the flow in channel discussed in class on Friday, Oct 21st, to get the
deviation velocity profile (y, z) and final velocity profile vx (y, z). The problem is
posted under lectures on Blackboard. (5)
3. In a parallel one-dimensional flow in the positive x direction, the velocity varies linearly
from zero at y = 0 to 100 ft/s at y = 4 ft. Determine an expression for the stream function,
. Also determine the y coordinate above which the volume flow rate is half the total
between y = 0 and y = 4 ft. (10)
