Dear ___________,
I am contacting you
on behalf of the Los
Angeles affiliate of
Move To Amend.
Move To Amend is a
coalition of hundreds
of grassroots
organizations
working together to
amend the U.S.
Constitution to
establish that only
living human beings,
not corporations, are
endowed with
Constitutional rights
and that money is not
the same as free
speech.
This pernicious
doctrine of "corporate
personhood" has
meant that the rights
originally meant to
protect

human beings from the potentially oppressive powers of our government

now belong as well to the corporation, an artificial entity.
Corporations claim these constitutional rights in Federal court as they
attempt, often with success, to overturn, weaken, or get around laws
designed to protect the environment, worker safety, public health and
a myriad of other laws including campaign finance laws (of which the
Supreme Court decision in Citizens United is the most recent and very
blatant example).
A recent poll by ABC News/ Washington post reveals that over 80% of
the American public already oppose the idea of Corporate Personhood
and that this opposition cuts across political spectrum. Just this
week, Missoula, Montana, became the third city in the nation to pass a
ballot initiative (by a 75% margin of victory) calling for a constitutional
amendment and many other small cities have passed resolutions.
In Los Angeles, we've been working with the Los Angeles City Council to
draft a non-binding resolution (see attached). The resolution is scheduled
to be heard by the full City Council on December 6 at 10 a.m. If we
succeed, this will a significant step forward since Los Angeles will
become the first major city to call for an end to all corporate constitutional
rights.
We are also working with the City Council to have December 10 declared
"Democracy Day in LA" and to celebrate with a rally and parade at City
Hall. We are working to get national media coverage for these events.
Our immediate goal, however, is to get out as many supporters as we

can for the City Council vote. To that end we are asking organizations and individuals to
endorse the resolution and notify members about the vote.
Many of us are dedicated ________________ (fill in with whatever label corresponds to
your target, environmentalist, union members, small business owners, people of faith
etc.) who believe that passing this amendment will be the vehicle for asserting our
human desire for a _________(fill in with something that ties to the goals of the target
organization) over corporate profits.
Please let me know if your organization will endorse our resolution and join as a
coalition partner. Also let me know if theres anything you need from me to contact your
members and urge them to support the vote and join us for the City Council hearing on
December 6.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have before lending your support.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Your name
