A report on five different minerals.

Uses

Talc

Ground talc is used as an

ingredient in ceramics, paper,
paint, roofing, plastics, cosmetics,
talcum and baby powders, and a
variety of other assorted uses such
as making rubber and plastics.
Ground pyrophyllite is used in the
production of ceramics, heatresistant products called factories,
and paint.

Diamond

10

Abrasives Because diamonds are

so hard and durable, they are ideal
for grinding, cutting, drilling, and
polishing. When used as an
abrasive, very small pieces of
diamond are embedded into
grinding wheels, saw blades, or drill
bits.

Salt

2-2.5

Common salt is a mineral

composed primarily of sodium
chloride, a chemical compound
belonging to the larger class of
salts; salt in its natural form as a
crystalline mineral is known as rock
salt or halite. Salt is present in vast
quantities in seawater, where it is
the main mineral constituent. The
open ocean has about 35 grams of
solids per litre, a salinity of 3.5%.

Fluorite

3.5

The element fluorine has many

uses in our industrial society, and
fluorite is our major source of
fluorine. Consequently large
amounts of fluorite are used in
the production of hydrofluoric acid
and the manufacture of high-octane
fuels, as well as the manufacture of
flat panel displays and
semiconductors.

Gold

2.5-3

The Many Uses of Gold. Gold's

qualities make it one of the most
coveted metals in the world. Not
only can it be beautifully shaped
and sculpted, the yellow metal
conducts electricity and does not
tarnish. These qualities make it the
metal of choice for a wide variety of
industries
