Flow
Review graphing a line.
Review creating an
equation based on a
given line.
Discuss slope, y-intercept,
correlation, and
relationships between x
and y variables to create
a common language.
Discuss scenario. Ive
been trying to live a
healthier lifestyle, so Ive
been trying to count the
number of calories Im
consuming. I was reading
an article about fat
content the other day and
noticed that there used to
be a sandwich at Subway
that had 50 grams of fat
(chicken parmesan). It
made me wonder if fat
grams are related to
calories. I did some
research on the fat
content and calorie
content of different
sandwiches served at fast
food restaurants. Based
on this research, I want
the students to determine
how we could represent a
relationship between the
variables.
Pass out the exploration.
Walk around from group
to group and ask
questions about their
thinking. We wont guide
them in any particular
direction, but will only ask
them to double check
their math if they have
done a calculation

incorrectly and also ask

them about their thinking
by asking assessing and
advancing questions. At
the end of class, I will
collect an equation from
each group. If they
havent finished all the
follow-up questions, they
will finish them for
homework.
We will discuss the
equations that they got
and I will have some
groups present by
selecting and sequencing
the night before.
Discuss follow-up
questions, their
predictions, and the
misconception of just
using a proportion.
I will explain the line of
best fit, its purpose, and
the easiest methods of
finding line of best fit. I
will also show them
different lines of best fit
graphed and explain
correlation.
I will have the students
work on a practice
problem individually to
use their new knowledge
to find a line of best fit by
themselves. Towards the
end, I will wrap
everything up and
summarize.
The students will take a
post-assessment to show
us what they have
learned in the lesson.
