Poem: Mentor

She has made many mistakes,

But dares not deny them.
She appreciates the life around her and
What she has yet to do.
She feels guilt and pain,
And struggles to forgive.
Once she told the world,
The moment that changed her life.
The moment that made her
Think differently, act differently,
Live differently.
Whether it was on top
Of a mountain or on
Tuesday at a grocery store.
She lives with integrity, authority,
And conviction.
She discusses what she
Holds dear with an enduring
Sense of passion.
Risky she can be, yet
Consistent too.
Rhythmic she can be, yet
Discordant too.
She edifies others and makes
Them stronger.
She is a mentor, she is a guide.
She is all of us.

I wanted to use personification to describe a mentor poem and

characterize it as a person. I feel that when a text is really guiding me
and speaking to me, it is like it comes to life, and thats very powerful.
But I also wanted to end on the idea that we could all be described the
way the mentor is because were all capable of being great writers.
The content of the poem describes some of the characteristics of a
great mentor text poem as described by Holland, Culham, and
Gallagher.
Culham p. 108-115
Holland p. 37-38
Gallagher p. 38-45
