STAAD.Pro Beam and Column Design Guide

This document provides steps for designing a beam and column using STAAD and the ACI code. It outlines specifying analysis type as P-Delta, listing combination loads, defining concrete design parameters like material properties and codes, adding design commands for the beam and column, running the analysis and design, and reviewing the results in the concrete design popup window. References for more information are also provided.

Note: Construction of the frame and specifying loads will not be discussed here.
Problem:
1.Design the beam based on the given design code.
2.Design the column based on the given design code.
Solution using STAAD:
1. After all the requirements needed for the analysis has been performed, we first
needed to Specify Analysis Type.
a. Go to Analysis/Print Page on the left side of the screen.

b. In the Analysis/Print Commands dialog box that appears, select the PDelta
Analysis tab. Then, click on the Add button followed by the Close button.
2. Next is the short listing of the loads to be used in concrete design.
a. In the menus on the top of the screen, go to Commands | Loading | Load
List option as shown below.

b. In the Load List dialog box that comes up, select Combination Load. Then,
click on the

button. Combination Load will be selected and placed in the

3. Specify Concrete Design Parameters

The parameters we wish to use and the corresponding command which
ought to appear in the STAAD input file are: (search the net on how to do this)
UNIT MMS NEWTON
CODE ACI
CLT 25 ALL
CLB 30 ALL
CLS 25 ALL
FC 25 ALL
FYMAIN 415 ALL
TRACK 1 ALL

4. Specify Design Command

a. Design commands are generated through the dialog boxes available under
the Commands button in the Concrete Design dialog box. So, let us click on
the Commands button as shown below.

b. In the Design Commands dialog box that comes up, select the DESIGN
BEAM option and click on the Add button. Then the DESIGN COLUMN then
Add.

c. Associate the BEAM DESIGN command to B1 and B2. Then the COLUMN
DESIGN command to C1, C2 and C3. (search the net on how to do this)
5. Performing the Design and Analysis
a. In order to perform Analysis and Design, select the Run Analysis option from
the Analyze menu.

b. As the Analysis progresses, several messages appear on the screen as

shown in the next figure.
