Law of the nature

After the war in England, Lord of the flies was written by William Golding. The war
that occurred with the influence of the theme of this story which is based on the author's
experience. The story is about a group of young British boys whose airplane has been crashed
after trying to evacuate from England. Only the survivors are the group of young children. All
the boys have to live on the island by themselves. They create their own rules and try to adapt
themselves to the new environment. Weakness is the symbol that represented by the boy who
is unable to adapt to that environment and keep dying or it can be represented as the boy who
has no ability to control themselves and others. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding (1954)
uses weakness as a theme which is revealed by Piggy, Simon, and SamnEric.
In Lord of the Flies, Golding expresses the theme of weakness via Piggy. Piggy
strongly illustrates the theme weakness through physical appearance and characteristics. Due
to his sickly physical appearance, he has asthma, bad eyesight, and also he is an obese boy
that is showed in the quotes, Can't catch the breath. I was the only boy in our school what
had asthma said the fat boy with the touch of pride. And Ive been wearing specs since I
was three (p. 9). Unlike any of the biguns. He is considered to be the weakest of the
biguns" in the story by the other boys which are obviously noticeable by disrespectful
actions. According to the saying that Jack smacked piggys head. . . piggy cried out in
terror. (p. 71). Piggy never dares enough to fight anyone back, which make the others
continually becoming more violent on him over time. Furthermore, Piggy adores the
leadership of Ralph, his only true friend, he follows every Ralphs rules, always agree with
Ralph, and relies on Ralph for protection. As for Golding says, Piggy wailed. Ralph! Dont
leave me! (p.176). It expresses that Piggy begs Ralph not to leave him alone with the boys

that have bullied him since the beginning of the story. Moreover, this quote vividly shows
Piggys life that depends on Ralph, without Ralph, Piggy will not be able to survive between
the savagery of human-being this long. However, the life of Piggy comes to an end because
he becomes even weaker after his glasses broken by Jacks tribe. As Piggy says, They
blinded me . . . (p.169). He finally loses the fight with the savagery. As the evidence has
been mentioned, Piggy is the character that Golding uses to expose the theme of weakness.
Equally important, Simon is significantly used to indicate the theme, weakness.
According to the Goldings explanation, Simon turned away from them and went where the
just perceptible path led him (p.56). The quote demonstrates that Simon does not have an
interest in socialising and frequently tries to isolate from the group of boys. He finds the
hidden place for him to have his own time away from the others. The place can be viewed as
his safety and comfort zone. Moreover, he also has a problem with self-confident as Golding
describes the Simons feeling of fears, Simon felt a perilous necessity speak, but to speak in
assembly was a terrible thing to him (p. 89). These are the effects of his mental deficiency
which influenced by mental weakness. The clarification of his mental weakness has happened
when he meets Lord of the flies, pig's head on the stick stakes in the ground, and he starts to
react horrifying to the imaginary voice What are you doing out here all alone? Arent you
afraid of me?Simon shook. (p.143). He finally discovers, when he is talking to Lord of the
Flies or haunted sound from the beast, everyone is scared of him, and actually lies within
themselves and the voice he talks to is actually his own thought that caused by the weakness
of his mind. Thus, Simon tries to warn the rest of the boys what he has just discovered
immediately after he gets his consciousness back with blood-covered and no expression
face. The fear has already conquered the rest of the boys mind, the lost all the strength their

mind make them attack Simon that they think is the beast without hesitation. The death of
Simon clearly revealed to the weakness of the boys mind in the way of fear. The idea of
Simons mental weaknesses in Lord of the Flies definitely shows that Simon is the factor that
lead to the displaying of the theme, weakness.
Thirdly, another character that Golding also chooses to play an important role to
illustrate the theme of weakness is Samneric. Sam and Eric are identical twins who are called
Samneric and treated as an individual as piggy says, . . . . You got to treat Samneric as one
turn. They do everything together(p.138). In this case, what Samneric is called and treated
can be considered as being abusive. However, why the twins let others call and treat so and
never argue is because they cannot fight and do not have any courage to do so. Since, they are
too weak, not doing a thing well when they are apart as in this quote shown They could
never manage to do things sensibly if that meant acting independently (p.87). They
become a part of each other and combine their strengths as one. This causes both of them to
get more chance of surviving on the island. Even though, they get doubles of the strength that
does not make them strong enough, they are still in control of Jack and Ralph, they follow
every order which they are given without any argument. When the island is falling apart in
chapter eleven, Jack demands Samneric to join his tribe through the violence threat . . . The
twins lay, inexpertly tied up . . .(p.179). Samneric finally betrays Ralph because of the
terrified of the torment. Samneric evidently represents the theme of weakness.
In conclusion, the three characters in Lord of the Flies which are Piggy, Simon, and
SamnEric point out a theme of the weakness of the story. Every boy on the island has their
own weaknesses, but it can be found in many different forms such as moral and physical
weakness. The weakness is kept deep inside humanity. When it appears, it can suddenly

destroy the peoples spirit. Nevertheless, people are able to overcome the weakness. There is
another important point that people should consider which is keeping weakness as a
motivation to enhance oneself to uncover a hidden potential. The Identification of
individuality would be a valuable consequence of weakness.
