Rules from 'The Classroom Experiment'

- Pupils learn best after a short period of exercise

- ''Smart is not something you are, smart is something you get''
- If you wish to change things in your classroom, make sure not to do it all
at once.
- If you allow pupils to volunteer to participate, you make the gap between
IQs bigger.
- When you ask a question, do not let the pupils raise their hands but
choose a pupil at random
- Engage the parents. Show them what a day in their childs life at school
is.
- Sometimes feedback given by pupils is very effective for a teacher to
improve the lessons.
- 'Secret Student' is a great way to have group responsibility and to work
positively with peer pressure. Also, it is a good reward system.
- Cups (green, yellow, red) are simple and effective way for a teacher to
see the understanding of the pupils. You could also use an alternative
system with the same effect, such as wooden blocks (used often in Dutch
primary schools).
- Comments are more effective for learning than grades. An ideal
compromise is to first give the pupils their comments, make sure they read
them, then give them their grade.
- Using mini-whiteboards is a great way to incorporate all pupils in the
classroom activity. By asking the pupils to write their answers on the
whiteboard, everyone gets to share their thoughts.
