Dear policemen, vigilantes, and the mayor of Chicago,
Oppression of my fellow African-Americans will not be tolerated no longer. They are
exhausted of the fear that they or their loved ones may fall victims of the ruthless and senseless
gestures made by our protectors. The duty of Chicagos police is to serve and protect the people who
devote their days to the welfare of their city. Unfortunately, officers are misusing their powers to
ensue the demise of our race of faulty reasons. Weapons have been placed into the hands of those
with wrongful rationals. We cannot let these actions proceed and occur in the current trend that it is.
We are lives and we represent spirits. We cannot tolerate the belief that our lives are inconsequential.
Chicago is the largest region for killings and woundings from firearms. We need to stop the blood
from shedding from our skin: August 2016 was a devastating time for our people. The number of
homicides was staggering in August: 90 souls lost, 384 shootings, and 472 total shooting victims. The
simple pull of the trigger can end a life and figuratively end the lives of the victims families.
This is not only a police-related issue. Firearms have been placed into the wrong hands, of
those who wish to express
their their anger through the
demise of another. Nykea
Aldridge was the mother of
four young children. This
woman was shot in the head
and killed for by a man
accompanied by another. The
four young children were left
abandoned, hopeless, and

missing the most prominent figure in their lives. Why must this stigma occur? Why allow such deadly
tools be accessed by those who wish harm upon others?
The solutions are countless but we must work together to enforce them and bring change. Mr.
Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, you must take more into consideration. Stronger gun laws may be enforced in
Chicago. A more strict ban of firearms may be effective, such as the termination of purchase on black
markets. A longer period of imprisonment may be issued to those who commit homicide, in order to
reassure the seriousness of action with a firearm. In regards to the police, something that may be
established is a difference in training and education. Further educating policemen and women about
racial prejudices and how they may lead to an unjust injury is important.
Sincerely,
Frederick Douglass.
