Example of Reading Material

Read carefully and comprehend the text then answer the following question by
giving the argument or supporting sentence to support your answers.

FORCE
1.We can describe a force only by its effects. 2.It cannot be
measured directly like a length. 3.A force can start something
moving. 4.If we push against a small object it moves. 5.A force
can also start something or hinder motion6..If we brake a moving
car it slows down and will eventually stop. 7.Suspend a heavy
mass from a copper wire. 8.The wire extends, showing that a force
can stretch a body. 9.Forces may also compress, bend, or even
break an object.
10.A force can be one of attraction. 11.The force of attraction
exerted by huge mass of the earth is called gravity. 12.If we pick
up a stone, then release it, it falls to the ground
because of
gravitational force. 13.Gravity is an example of a natural force.
14.Whether a force is naturally or deliberately exerted it can not
exist by itself. 15.Force must always occurs in pairs, never in
isolation.
16.When a force acts on a rigid body it is balanced by an equal
reaction force which acts in the opposite direction. 17.If a man
stands on slippery surface and brings a force to bear on a heavy
load, the reaction force makes him slide backwards. 18.Similarly if
a man fire a rifle, the force which pushes the bullet forwards will
be matched by a force which makes the gun backwards against his
shoulder

I. Study

the following statements carefully and write down

whether they are true (T) or false (F)
according to the
information expressed above. Give your argument and write
which sentence supporting your answer.
1. Force cannot be measured directly.

A force can slow down a moving object.

We can make an object move by applying force.
A body can be compressed by force.
A heavy mass can exert a force.
Gravity is a force.
Deliberately exerted forces can exist alone.
When a force acts on a rigid body, the magnitude of the reaction force
depends on the size of rigid body.
9. The force which pushes a gun backwards when it is fired is reaction
force.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Replace the words underlined

with expression from the
passage which have
similar meaning
1. When a force acts on a rigid body there is an equal but opposite
reaction force.
II.

When a gun is fired it recoils.

3. Gravity is a force of attraction.
4. Gravity is a naturally exerted force
5. A force can not exist alone.
6. The force which pushes a bullet forwards is matched by a
reaction force.
7. A heavy mass may stretch a cooper wire.
8. Newton investigated gravity.
